Camera won't power on either with new batteries installed or by using the firewire/USB connection. Camera wasn't dropped or mishandled at all, but had been sitting unused for about 2 months. Any ideas?

fitted new batteries but camera will not power up at all. Tried different batteries but still nothing , camera was working fine up till battery change, no damage to connectors or battery housing.

Nikon D40-camera won't power on intermittently. Powers up and then goes blank. Card access lights every time the battery is inserted. Has happened three times. Last time was the last, and hasn't powered up since.
Tried resetting to no avail.
