! this card cannot be used comes up after I took a few photos

Have used this camera for over a year, no problems. Got back from vacation downloaded all the photos no problem. But since I have a new computer, and don't have it all tied together, I didn't erase the originals. So today I took a few photos, no problem, then I got the warning "This card cannot be used" So i figured the memory card was full, so I attached it to the computer and it won't download, and I get the same warning.

As I said, this camera has worked for a year with my laptop. In the middle of taking photos it said "this card cannot be used" I thought the memory might be full but when I tried to download I got the same message and the camera will do nothing but turn on and give that message. Yes, I have changed the battery and turned it on and off.

This happens when the SD card is locked from he button that itis placed on the right side...or if the card was damaged..or from some reason or an error need to be formatted again ...My advice is to see if it is not locked...and if it is not..try to save all that you can by downloading them with a cable from the camera if they are readable in the camer a...and after that format it again ..If you already have the pictures somewhere and you do not need to save them ..just format the camera if it is not a case of being locked physically from the button ..

if it seam to be working and it was not need to unlock it ..than get some kinda solution ...alcohol based and clean it ...cause the issue was the contacts being a little oxidized ..

By the way ..the card may have some damage ..so if it works in the camera at least ..and you have the data cable ..just download all from it and save into computer just in case that will make trouble in th efuture and you will need to replace it ...So this way at least you will not loose the data ..
If you never used the data cable ..you will need to install its driver into the computer in order to work ...or if it does not have any .that came with it ..than it will be seen auto in the my computer folder as a removable device ...

Hi,

No need to worry. It's just that as your computer is new so you will have to install the driver (the software that came with the camera) once again.
If you have the CD then install it from there or you can download it from here.( Nikon Transfer)
If you are still unable to download the pics from the camera then the best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive.

Good luck and have a nice day.
Thanks for using Fixya.

But today while I was taking the pictures it stopped working in the middle. When I downloaded today I was using my original laptop not the new computer. So it has downloaded on the new computer, and the old laptop fine. But now camera is not working to take pictures or download on original computer.
    Thanks!

You were saying that the memory is full. If so, then delete some photos from the camera itself.

    Also replace the battery.

Switch it off and wait for a minute and then again switch it on.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

Try some photo recovery software to rescue the files on your digital camera memory card, here are some for your options.

Photo Recovery (for Windows)
Photo Recovery for Mac

Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

You can connect camera's memory card to computer with a card reader (get one from ebay if you haven't already have one), then download this file recovery program which is outstanding among all file recovery software.

Downloading photos from my Canon A95

Sounds like the card has become corrupted. Take no more pics until you've recovered the photos, take the card out of the camera. Here's some freeware photo recovery software that should be what you're looking for:

http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/recovering-those-accidentally-lost.html

You will need to use a flash card reader with this software. Also, highly recommend that you consider using a card reader to download your pictures in the future. You insert the camera's memory card into the reader, and then insert the reader into a USB port on your computer. The card then shows up as a hard drive so that you can simply copy/paste or drag your picture files onto your computer. Card readers are much more faster in downloading pics, do not require the use of your camera's batteries, and provide much more reliable downloading of the pictures (fewer errors). They're also VERY inexpensive these days. Here are some examples from Amazon for your CF card:

http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1223745821/ref=sr_st?keywords=cf+compact+flash+card+reader&rs=172282&page=1&rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Acf+compact+flash+card+reader&sort=price

And finally, recommend formatting your card in your camera only AFTER you've recovered your photos (this will erase the card). This should fix the card for future use. Turn on the camera, select menu, then select the tools menu. Scroll down to the selection outlining your's cards memory capacity and select it. Then follow the formatting prompts.

Computer won't recognize the photos on my memory card

If you have them on a removable card, try them in a card reader.

It's quite likely there's nothing wrong with the photo's, but your camera may have a problem.
