Question about Projection Televisions

1 Answer

I have owned a Sony rear projection TV for a little over two years. Model KP-51HW40. I have two problems. The first problem has been going on for about one year. Most of the time when, it is first turned on, the screen will flash a few times and then it goes into a "standby" mode. The red "Standby/timer" light on the front of the TV starts blinking. I have to press the power button to get the picture back on. This will normally happen for two or three times before it will stay on. Sometimes if the TV is turned off for a short time and then turned back on, I have to go through that cycle 10 - 15 times before it works. I called Sony and was told to unplug it to reset everything - but that doesn't work. I have looked thru my manuel and find nothing about putting the TV on "Standby" The second problem occured the other night. I now get a double image and each one is a different color - red and green. I assume that the blue bulb has burned out. The picture on the right side of the screen( about 25% of the picture) seems to be ok with all colors and in focus. If the blue one is out, is this something that I can replace or does it require an expert? Should I replace all bulbs or just the one that is out? What is the expected life of these bulbs?

Problem # 2 is a convergence issue. If you can solder, you can repair this yourself. As far as problem #1 goes, count the blinks. The set goes into standby as protection from further damage when a problem is detected. The blink count is an internal diagnostic that indicates the circuit in which the problem was detected. Report back here with the blink count if you can.
I'll look up the convergence IC numbers in the mean time.

Well repair of TV depends on your own skills and if you have any experience of electronics stuff repair then it would not be difficult. This kind of repair requires good parts soldering in PCB expertise.

Your Sony KP-51HW40 seems have problem with convergence out ICs (two ICs) that would be replaced. Both ICs STK392-560 are located on D Board and available in Part Store.

Screen shakes / jumps vertically on my Sony KP-51HW40

The jitter is called a vertical sync problem. The problem is on the "A" board. It can be replaced or rebuilt but will be quite expensive to service.

KP-51HW40 - Picture not Clear

Your problem is a typical convergence problem that happens on almost every tube type projection TV set ever built. There are two Convergence amp IC's that need to be replaced. If you have no TV repair experience, play it safe and call in a pro to assist you in this. Good Luck
