Im trying to transfer old home videos that were recorded on an rca proview, to digital media on my computer and eventually dvds. however i am unsure as to which, if any, is a surefire method, as i tried capturing the files into adobe premiere pro cs5, via canopus and firewire, and premiere continues to be unresponsive.

It is not necessary to use windows media player to transfer your Recordings, just plug in your device into your computer and go into " My Computer " and there you should be able to go into your device and play or put your files into the CD.
The RCA Vr5220A should come with a manual and have instructions on how to do that.
If you have purchased multiple dvd players and none of them will play your DVDs (including your old player which previously played the old DVDs), then your issue is with the DVDs. You have to replace them because they have been damaged or scratched and can't be read by the laser anymore. DVDs are not indestructible and can eventually be damaged beyond repair. You'll have to replace the DVDs, which makes more economic sense than buying multiple DVD players to try and play them. If these are home movies or personal recordings you should contact a local computer store about data recovery.
I have to agree with XELIAM regarding finishing the disk, under the DVD "FUNCTIONS" selection from the remote. I also use the SLYSOFT products to transfer my videos to what ever other mode of video I wish to have, whether iPOD (MP4), or DIVX (AVI) or loads of other options. Slysoft makes a GREAT product
The media converter that you used to transfer the video to the mp3 player has a checkbox that is usually selected by default that says "Synchronize audio" It is all too easy to accidentally uncheck this option. Open the RCA Video Converter, go into Properties, and make sure that this box is checked. RCA once had a link to an updated version of the RCA Video Converter, but all the links seem to be broken right now - you may have to call them if you have lost your installation CD.
your dvd is a player . . . and . . . recorder ?
( check your user manual ) ; with a firewire
connection - all devices communicate , without
a computer to mediate controls - so your user
manual is necessary , if no video is displayed
on your monitor .
