Question about Proform Crosstrainer 755 Console Treadmill

2 Answers

My Proform 755 Crosstrainer jerks, especially at slower speeds. Very annoying and dangerous! This is a new problem. I've tried adjusting the walking belt tension both tighter and looser -- that is not the problem. The manual says nothing about ever lubing this treadmill, are you supposed to, and how? Or do I need to replace the drive motor belt, and if so how do I do that? Thank you!

Thanks, but I was hoping for an answer specific to my brand/model...a link to a general overview of treadmill doesn't help me identify my problem or do the repair. Does someone know the answer to my question (not something generic that I can simply Google...) Thanks!

No, officially you are not supposed to lube it. But it's recommended that you regularly do that, they even provide you with a lube kit. Try this first, it may be as simple as that.
It can't be a problem with the belt, if it would have been one you would have noticed it at high speeds, not low ones. Your problems are caused by the fact that the control unit is no longer capable of controlling the engine finely. This can be caused by 3 main causes:
1 - the engine itself (its bearings to be more precise) is faulty. You can just do a basic test:disconnect it from the band and spin it by hand - if you feel or hear grinding then the engine is dead and must be replaced by them.
2 - the control module is fried - the only way you can test it is to measure the voltage to the motor with it in operation. This is something that is best to be left to them.
3 - the speed sensors on the engine are no longer function correctly: either the sensors are full of dirt and gunk and need to be cleaned or the sensors (or the connecting cables) are defective - the only thing you can do is to clean them thoroughly and make sure all cables are firmly plugged in.
If this hasn't helped then it's time to call

Thank you for your very thorough and well thought-out answer.  Actually when I opened up the hood to test your motor bearing theory, I found quite a lot of black rubber dust to the left of the motor.  So I'm pretty sure it is the drive motor belt that needs to be replaced.  (Kind of a relief considering how relatively inexpensive the part is!)

A belt that has worn out so quickly? Either you have used the trainer a lot or the belt was of a really low quality. From now on you should keep an eye on it and replace it regularly every year.

Hmm...I'm not sure whether it wore out quickly or not...I'm not clear what that's referring to.  Maybe where I wrote "it's a new problem" it sounded like I meant it was a new machine...?  I think Proform doesn't make the 755 anymore so it's got to be at least a few years old.  The machine had 480 miles on it when I bought it; probably this is the original belt.  (Though I'm not sure how many miles a drive motor belt is typically good for.)

Anyway, I have a new drive motor belt on the way (and some lube - thanks for the heads-up)...hopefully that will turn out to be the only problem.  I will report results.

The 755 model went out of production just 1.5 years ago. But 450 miles is a clear indication that it's a lot older, and a lot of miles for a belt - just replace it, its time has come.

Belt jerks with each step. At first it hesitated with random steps but has become more pronounced. I walk at 3.5-4MPH but belt does it at any speed. It is not plugged into a surge protector.

I have the same problem with this type of treadmill but only when running on it. I usually increase the incline to prevent it. I believe the tension on the belt has become loose. I have been looking for a guide on how to tighten it but havent come across one yet. If i find one ill post back with the link.

Belt won't move

does is just not move when you're standing on it, or not even move when you're not standing on it. It may be a simple belt adjustment or if the motor is running but there's no track movement you may be looking at a loose/broken drive belt. Take the cover off, start it up and look at the motor/drive pulley assembly. If the motor turns and the front roller doesn't, tension the drive motor by moving it back. If the front roller turns but the track doesnt, do a track adjustment as per your users manual.

Belt needs tensioning up on its adjusters or the motor drive gear has come loose and needs tightening back up.

Treadmil stops or slows down upon walking.

Check both belts to be sure they are adjusted and not slipping.Check the underside of the walk belt to see if it feels frayed in the center as compared to the edges, the center always wears more than the edges a really worn belt must be replaced. if it is nor worn there is a wax lubricant for proform treadmills that can be purchased at retail stores that sell treadmills.Sears, dicks sporting goods and also treadmilldoctor.com are good places to buy it.

Sometimes the tread needs to be lubricated. This was the case with ours. You can get a lubrication kit at ****'s Sporting Goods or other larger sport stores and it will instruct you on how to do it.
