Ruud 11 Seer AC will not come on

My ac has quit coming on. When I looked inside the unit that sits outside, it looked like my contact switch was rusted and not working. I pushed down on the contact and the unit came on. So I held it down with a brick so that I could go inside and check on the air. It was blowing and was cold. So I thought the contact switch was bad and replaced it. It still will not come on by the thermostat. The thermostat partially works because the blower will come on and shut off by the setting but the compressor will not run by the thermostat. Is this simply a thermostat gone bad?
Thanks for any help.

Ok, do the following test:

take the cover of the thermostat and if you have a voltmeter put one lead on r and the other on y

if you have 24 volts low voltage is o.k.

now jump the r and y together and go outside if compressor turns on and runs wala! bad thermostat

now jump r and g if fan comes on fan relay's good

now check against any wiring diagram to see if any time delay device is installed for compressor

and if the unit has a circuit board, well the part that controls cooling went bad.

but if you have a fan relay installed and the fan goes on its o.k

Some Ruuds have a red rubber cap reset button on the bottom of the unit or inside. Usually the fan quits and trips the switch. Or look at the metal run cap with 3 leads on it, if it looks bulged(concave on top) and not flat and sunk in, replace that and ur good to go. Let me know. Please pull the power disconnect if you attack the cap, and write down what leads come off which terminals.

My AC unit outside will not turn on

can you hear anything at all running in outside unit? ruud units have a hi pressure switch located between the 2 tubes going to inside of unit it normally has red button but sometimes the red overing over the button comes off so just look for a piece sticking out that you can push in.
If you do hear other things running in outside unit most lkely you will  have a bad motor or motor capacitor. I would reccomend calling a service company unless you have the tools and meters to check this stuff out. If you do have the tools necessary message me back and I'll try to walk you thru troubleshooting. thanks Peyton

A/C quit running

This question is really to broad to answer. There are several things that could cause it to stop running. I think I would turn everything off, let it cool down for several hours and try it again. When you kick it back on, take note of what is running and what's not running. Inside fan, outside fan, compressor. If the outside unit will not run at all it could be as simple as a grasshopper caught in the contacts. If you hear the compressor running outside but no outside fan, The fan motor probably needs replaced. Please make sure that all power to the unit is TURNED OFF before removing cover plates on outside unit and before trying to remove insects from contact points. Check all wiring inside outside unit while it is open. Also check capacitors for swelling or leaking. If you don't know how to turn all the power off or open the outside unit, you need to call a professional AC technician. Hope this helps. kstfas
