Question about Air Conditioners
My ac has quit coming on. When I looked inside the unit that sits outside, it looked like my contact switch was rusted and not working. I pushed down on the contact and the unit came on. So I held it down with a brick so that I could go inside and check on the air. It was blowing and was cold. So I thought the contact switch was bad and replaced it. It still will not come on by the thermostat. The thermostat partially works because the blower will come on and shut off by the setting but the compressor will not run by the thermostat. Is this simply a thermostat gone bad?
Thanks for any help.
Before you do anything check your overflo emergency switch!
Drain is stopped up causing switch to cut condenser off

Ok, do the following test:
take the cover of the thermostat and if you have a voltmeter put one lead on r and the other on y
if you have 24 volts low voltage is o.k.
now jump the r and y together and go outside if compressor turns on and runs wala! bad thermostat
now jump r and g if fan comes on fan relay's good
now check against any wiring diagram to see if any time delay device is installed for compressor
and if the unit has a circuit board, well the part that controls cooling went bad.
but if you have a fan relay installed and the fan goes on its o.k
