Question about Boating

1 Answer

We have a 1993 Yamaha sterndrive on our 1993 Ebbtide. When the boat is on the trailer with water hooked up there is no problem with shifting, however, when we put the boat in the water we have problems with shifting both in forward and reverse. We have replaced several parts, but still have the same problem, is there a diagram of the sterndrive?

the weight of the motor will be obtainable from the Yamaha web site in the specifications section the weight of the boat is any body guess as you didn't give a manufacturer name
most marine shops will get close as they are familiar with boat constructions and supply trailers to suit

Do I need to remove the sterndrive to change the inboard motor?

No you can leave it in place. I see lots in the marina with the engine out. You can support it with blocks if you want. The back of a sterndrive boat is strong.

My '83 OMC outdrive won't shift gears

normally there are two gear cables , one from the control lever to the engine and then one from the top of the engine to the sterndrive ! disconnect the cable from the engine that goes to the sterndrive and try the control lever and if free then refit the other cable , remove the control lever cable and then by hand move the mec that operates the rear cable in to forward , neuteral and reverse checking each one selects freely and if not then replace the cable ! ( out of water job ) !

I have a mercursier boat the the outdrive/ sterndrive will go down normal but when you hit the trailor switch it comes up very slowly or not at all.

There can be several reasons. Low fluid in pump. Low battery, Rusted bearings. Weak tilt/trim motor, outdrive bellows binding.

When you go down everything is in your favor. Gravity helps alot. When you go up, first water is heavier than air and it must move past the water, then gravity and the bellows must contract.
