Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

I just installed a craftsman garage door opener and the chain is sagging on one side and super tight on the other. When opening the door, the chain sags on both sides. I have tried tightening the nuts on the screw as the manual says. Could my chain be too long?

When the door is opening the chain will be tight on one side and slack on the other. When it is closing it will be just the opposite. It is important that you do not over tighten the chain. I suppose the wrong chain could be shipped with the opener but it wouldn't be common.

Use the emergency release handle to release the door. Run the opener to the open position until it stops. Close the door until it stops. Now re engage the the door.

Garage door has a dirty grease mark down middle of door as if chain or something is rubbing on it.as it opens. When I watch it opens it appears that nothing is even coming close to door as it opens and...

When the door is opening the chain on one side of the rail is pulled tight and the opposite side sags. It is just the opposite when the door is closing. It could be the sagging side is rubbing against the door but it seems you would have seen this. Also the chain shouldn't have grease on it. Just a light coat of lubricant from the factory. You might try tightening the chain just a tad.

How do I tighten sagging garage door chain?

I think you have more problems than just a sagging chain. It is most likely sagging because the bronze bushing at the gear and sprocket assembly is bad. It lets the sprocket lean forward and loosens the chain. You will also need to remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white gear just in front of the motor and is most likely stripped.

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door goes back up it is a door sensor problem. You chain should sag just a little. If you tighten it too much it will click as it goes over the sprocket. You can increase the down force which is an adjustment near where all those white wires go. A 1/4 turn should be enough. Release the door from the opener and operate it by hand. It should move freely and when you have the door approximately waist high it should stay put. Neither raising nor closing.

My i/2 hp crafstman chain drive opener stops about a foot from the floor i got it up and noticed the chain was sagging about a foot below the bar how dow I tighten the chain

The adjustment for the chain is on the trolley. That is the part the chain and the door are connected to. Your chain is sagging entirely too much. Have you done any other work to this opener?

Model 139.53930DM I adjusted the chain and now door only goes up 12" (too tight?)

The chain might be to tight but I think you should check for broken door springs or a bad drive gear. The gear is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. The chain should sag just a bit.

Garage door chain is sagging

If the chain is adjusted properly the chain will sag slightly on one side when the door is closed and on the other side when it is open. It should not sag enough that it is dragging on the T-rail. You can adjust it at the trolley. If you over tighten it you will hear a clicking sound when the opener opens or closes.

I have a craftsman garage door opener and the chain came off trac

YES - YOU ALSO NEED TO BE SURE IT IS IN THE CORRECT POSITION WHEN YOU REINSTALL IT.

MOVE THE TRAVELER / TROLLEY TO THE CLOSED POSITION RUN THE OPENER TO THE CLOSED POSITION. LOOSEN CHAIN AND REINSTALL.

TIGTHEN CHAIN ONLY ENOUGH TO KEEP IT FROM SAGGING BELOW THE RAIL. (TOO TIGHT WILL RUIN THE BUSHINGS ON THE DRIVE).

NOTE; THE BUSHINGS MAY BE BAD THIS WOULD CAUSE THE CHAIN TO COME OFF OR SAG TOO FAR, LOOK FOR EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE BUSHING UNDER THE CHAIN SPROCKET.

IF IT IS BAD A KIT IS AVAILABLE TO REPAIR.

HOPE THIS HELPS
