You definitely need to replace the keyboard on the system. If your system still within warranty and you have Complete Care warranty from Dell this will be covered, if not you may need to pay for it or purchase a keyboard part.

Spilled some red wine in my Toshiba Satellie L640 and now some of the keys stick or don't work so I would like to clean it. 1. How does one do this? 2. Is it a bad idea to do this? I'd rather not...

Hi.

You can try cleaning the keyboard but the keyboard has to be removed first before you attempt to clean it. That hopefully will work, however please be aware that if the wine has gotten between the keyboard membrane then it could cause the keyboard to type other characters not assigned to them or others as well as their own when you reinstall the keyboard.

To clean the keyboard first we have to remove it. Turn the laptop off and close the lid, remove any AC power that's connected. Turn the laptop over and then take out the battery.
In the battery compartment remove the 2 screws holding the keyboard bezel down that are circled in the picture below. (the keyboard bezel is thin piece of plastic that runs the length of the laptop above the keyboard)

When the screws are removed turn the laptop back over, open the lid and carefully lift up the keyboard bezel and remove it from the laptop like in the picture below.

Next you have revmove the three screws securing the keyboard in place like in next picture.

Lift up the top side of the keyboard and rest it on the palm rest/touchpad. Be very careful as the keyboard is still connected to the motherboard like in this picture below.

Now you have to remove the keyboard. In order to remove the keyboard you'll have to unlock the connector and release the cable.
Look at the next picture and lift up the right side of the locking tab so it opens up at a 90 degree angle as shown and carefully pull away the ribbon cable

Lift the keyboard away from the laptop and then get a clean, warm, damp cloth and start to wipe the top of the keyboard. Don't try to remove the keys as you can damage the cradles and also they are very hard to put back on.
Keep on rinsing the cloth with clean warm water and wring it out a bit. Keep on repeating this until the keys release and become springy again.
Once you are happy with keyboard just reinstall the keyboard by reversing the steps above.

When you have re-assembled the laptop turn it on and open a notepad or text document and see if the keyboard is typing all the correct characters for the printed symbol. If some are not working or are typing multiple characterst then you will need to replace the keyboard. Click on the blue link below for an idea.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Wow! Electronics and Water do not mix. Your Dell Inspiron 1545 keyboard can be removed follow these instructions from Dell:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1545/en/SM/keyboard.htm#wp1179891

Then the next step is to get the water dryed out from under side.
As crazy as this may seem I have tried it on many other things like phones, and remotes left out in the rain.
Get a cheesecloth fill it up with rice! Yes RICE! It is one of the best absorbents.

Place it on the under where the keyboard sits overnight and give it a try in the morning.

Keyboard suddenly got weird

A keyboard is nothing more than a collection of small switches under the keys. A liquid will short out between the contacts of the switches and is the same as hitting the key. There are still fluids inside they keyboard circuitry. By using it like this it can short out the keyboard and ruin it. It needs to be taken out and cleaned and dried throughly before it is ruined. (might already be ruined). You can usually find replacement keyboards on places like ebay.com

KEYBOARD PROBLEM

Was there any liquids spilled inside the keyboard? You may need to have the keyboard replaced as they start to fail in due time.

Laptop keyboard not operational

If you replaced the keyboard with a Dell replacement 1501 keyboard and it still doesn’t work then yes the motherboard will probably have to be replaced. If your son spilled water on the laptop it could clear up after it completely dries. If it was juice, soft drink or sport drink the laptop could develop other issues. The syrup in these kinds of drinks don’t evaporate, they just remain there and accumulate foreign particles like dust, hair, dirt and eventually start to corrode electrical contacts like acid. Similar to the terminal posts on a car battery.

Your keyboard will probably have to be replaced which means you are going to have to spend money for a replacement, Ebay has some for about $40 or so. Toshiba keyboards are fairly easy to remove if you have some experience but if you?re not up to it you?ll probably have to pay for 15 to 30 minutes of labor. Let us know if you have any other questions otherwise please don?t forget to rate this post.
