SOURCE: Windows Vista does not boot with hard drives plugged in

I had the same problem with vista home 32bit. I accessed the bios then went into usb configuration, and disabled the "legacy suppor" for usb, this is an older support for usb 1.0 before 2.0. Once disabled was able to reattach two external hdd, and reboot normally

sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive

You will need to try formatting the drive. You can do this from the drive management section on the Mac.

SOURCE: I have a WD My Book 1 TB external hard drive. It

One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly. 5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you dont do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.
7. It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
You should also do this to cheack the drives connections are not bad inside the enclosure.

8. If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

9. If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further
10. ensure that you have set removable drives for "quick removal" or that you use the "Safly Remove Hardware" option often shown on the lower toolbar.It is possible that files my not be fully written to external devices before they are removed. This corrupts the file itself and even on occasion the drive.

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems
hope this helps

We bought some time ago an WD External Harddisk and now the Adapter doesn`t work anymore! What can I do?

Try connecting it to a different computer.

Any external storage device has three major parts:
* USB cable
* disk-drive
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter

Try a different USB cable.

Disconnect the disk-drive from that adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if you can read the files, which implies that the adapter is the part that has failed.

If you cannot read from the disk-drive, check its WARRANTY status. W.D. will replace it, if the warranty is still valid.

Otherwise, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program: find the serial-number of your unit, access their web-site, and purchase another W.D. external storage unit, at a significant discount, by citing the serial-number.

Or, if the adapter is OK, then replace the disk-drive by a new one, and close-up the casing, to create a "revived" external storage device for your use.

Make sure when before you remove your unit you use the Safely Remove Hardware at the bottom of your task bar on the right. I looks like card with a green arrow on top. This is very important as you can ruin your drive if you do not do this each and every time. I had the same unit and ruined it by not doing this. Then reset your computer and let it reset everything without your external hard drive. Check your connections and plug in to 2.0 usb port. See if your computer picks up the drive. If it does do a scan on your drive, and check stability. You can download software from WD for this. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

I have a WD external hard drive USB 2.0 750 GB. It was working just fine for many months, and suddenly, my laptop won't "read" it -- it's not listed/detected in "my computer." I thought there was something...

If the device is recognized and not listed as a driver in the Explorer, then the disk is not recognized as having been partitioned and formatted. You can use the Disk Manager to see if there is anything listed on the disk.
Start - > right-click My Computer -> Properties
In the management console, go to disk management and check your disks. The external disk should be there and then you can see the partitions and drives assigned to it.
If there is nothing on it, your MBR could be damaged, which needs to be restored.

Alternatively you could partition and format it, but then you'd loose the data on it, so that is a last resort.

I think a program called Acronis Disk Director Suite can restore MBR's. Have a look at this external hard disk troubleshooting article.

External USB Drives No Longer Detected

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

WD 500gb external HD shuts down when plugged into USB port

Try a replacement USB cable first. If that does not fix the problem, then the USB to SATA adapter board is faulty, in that case you will need to take out the internal disk to replace the external enclosure.

see
YouTube - How To: Take Apart A Western Digital My Book Enclosure

If unit is under warranty see : WD Support > Warranty Services > End User > Warranty Policy.

Note any SATA external enclosure willl work wthe same with the internal WD HD.
