Ipod not recognised

I have two ipod, a 5th generation and a classic. the classic died a death and after resetting lots of times came up with the normal start screen. when i plug into the computer it shows as a hard disk in device manager but says it has no driver. I have unistalled it and the same situation happens all over again. It shows the system 32 stuff, but still says it has no driver. Also when I plug in it does the 'do not disconnect' thing for about a minute and then goes back to the welcome screen with music lists etc.It never shows in itunes and i have reinstalled itunes. i have downloaded the the ipod recovery thing as well and no joy. it does not show in my computer and systemworks cant see it either.

this ipod is my husbands, and we are now having to share mine. please help as i need to reclaim my ipod!
