Question about Gateway M460 Notebook
When ac adapter is plugged in, the laptop quickly flucuates from charging to battery power, and sometimes it doesn't charge at all
Your problem is your DC Power Jack that you're plugging into. It's very common with this series. The Power Jack over time starts to pull away from the motherboard (the soldering that holds it fails). It can short out back and forth between only power, only charging, or doing both or doing nothing.
There are several companies on eBay that do the repair for around 60 to 80 dollars including the return shipping. You pay the shipping to them. Go to eBay and in the search box type in "DC Powerjack Repair Replace" and you can select the company of your choice. Check their "Feedback" rating to make sure their not just arrived as a vendor.
I have used several different ones (I'm a laptop repair specialist) and have never had a problem yet.
