Hi,

This is a windows software issue you will need to reinstall windows, I would back your laptop up if you have any data you wish to keep onto disk and use your recovery disks that you should have got with your laptop. If you have no disks and you can log into your laptop there is usually a program that will let you create recovery disks. Create them and use them to reinstall your operating system.

This should solve the desktop error.

Hope this helps need anymore info feel free to ask.

is the hd formatted?
when the computer is booting, hit the f12 key. this gets you to the bootup sequence windows. highlight the cd/dvd drive as first startup. reboot w/the recovery disk in the drive. this should allow you to format the hd and then install th files on the recovery disk.

Receiving "Load Error!" on bootup. Tried using the recovery disk which seemed to be working fine, but still receive the same error. I've run the recovery disk several times with the same result.

If you had run recovery disk for several times and still have the same problem then you must go to other solution. Reprogram your computer operating system, this is last thing you have to do. You need your operating system installer. Setup a fresh copy of it. Don't forget also the computer support cd which contain all the drivers needed in installing an operating system. Hope this could help..Please don't forget to rate me..Thanks..:-)

When starting windows, I get to the loggon page, I log on and suddenly there is a message saying, "this copy of windows hasn't been activated, would you like to do that now?" yes or no. when I click yes,...

I believe you are running Windows Vista. I've heard of many times that it has a problem loading or there is corruption in the bootup.

Even my mother's system crashed for no apparent reason.

Now, if you didn't make recovery disks, you can actually order them from HP for a price of about 40 dollars. As long as you have the original product key.

If you have recovery disks or obtain recovery disks based on the laptop you have, insert the first disk and there are options to repair the actual bootup files in Vista.

If you have important files on your system, have your hard drive hooked up to a standard PC through a USB external drive adapter and as long as there is no encryption, you should be able to retrieve them.

XP is the same to.

D610 DST Short Status Test Fail

It appears your hard disk has died and it may not be possible for you to retrieve your data.
Remove your hard drive from the laptop and insert it into an USB harddrive adapter, (they are not expensive and you can use it later as a external hard drive). Then plug it into the USB port of a working computer. The computer should/may see it as an external drive, if you are lucky you will be able to copy your data, if not, you are out of luck.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their service.

Might be a damaged sector. Otherwise i would think you (by accident) created a seperate partition on your C:\ (? main) HD. The cause of damage can be many things, certain types of certain brands or more sensitive in how fast these sectors get damaged. But you can at least try to repair them with the disk repair utility in Win XP, called ChkDsk ("check disk"). However, what may end up happening is that ChkDsk will mark the sector as bad (instead of attempting to recover any information) and your hard drive will no longer 'hover' over top of that area of the drive, making it impossible to recover any data on the sector. Maybe try to google for (free) BETTER third party software for this first. So what caused it is hard to discover after it happened, but you can try to repair it.
