Hello Sonny,

Welcome to FixYa !

The problem you're experiencing based on your description sounds like (unfortunately) a common one.

First check the float isn`t being obstructed and thereby indicating the unit is already full.

The other possibility....

The water inlet valve can be an issue with dishwasher's if they fail in the closed position, It'll need to be replaced likely, but you can try to fix it.

You can remove the water line and remove the valve and try to clean it out...it's usually futile, but worth a try.

You may want to call in a pro however, the part to repair it is available at most brick & mortar appliance part centers or you can check out on-line vendors such as "repairclinic.com" "searspartsdirect.com" or "apwagner.com" etc.

Do a search by typing in your actual model number and you should find it. Hope that helps move you forward.

Let me know if I you need help on how to change it etc.

**It's relatively easy with Whirlpool built Kenmore or any other for that matter. First Turn off the power, the water, safety first...access is gained through the kick plate/toe panel below the door.**

The valve will be on the left and involves only removing 2 screws, the water line in & out and 2 wires which go on either way...they aren't polarity specific. Should resemble this image...

Water in bottom of kenmore elite ultra wash dishwasher

you must check the filters that are at the bottom under the spray arm
then you must start and then hold down cancel or stop and it should kick in the automatic water discharge mode and activate the water pump if this does not work you need new dishwasher pump installed which can be found online by googleing your model number. gut if this all works then the small flapper thats internal on the pump isnt sealing and allowing water to flow back into the bottom. last but not least you might need a new control board.

Hi, I have a model 587 kenmore dishwasher which abruptly wont allow any water in right after I turn it on.

Assuming the water supply is on to the unit, check for a bad, stuck or clogged water fill valve. Some have a screen that can get plugged. You will need to turn off the water supply, remove the front lower cover, drain any remaining water out of the machine with a shallow pan, and then check the fill valve. You will probably have to remove it to do this. If you aren't comfortable with this kind of service, it's best to call a repair shop.

Another csue of this could be a problem with the dishwasher control board, but again, it's more advisable to have it checked by a repair shop.

If the display works, but the machine doesn't fill, wash, or pump out, the control board is the only component that could cause all these symptoms.

Kenmore Dishwasher #587.... doing nothing but heat dry

The problem appears to stem from the float and float switch. The float is a mushroom shaped plastic part that resides on the bottom left, just inside the door. It appears that the float does not release the float switch, causing the dishwasher to think it is full of water, and won't allow the dishwasher to fill. It's a relatively straight forward repair, but even with a new part, the same scenario is likely to repeat itself until the float or float switch is modified by Kenmore.
