Question about Frigidaire FRS26R4A Side by Side Refrigerator

Open Question

I noticed a puddle in front of my freezer and realized that the ice had melted into the icemaker everything was defrosted in the freezer and there was a noise. The frig was working so I tossed what I wanted to save in there. This morning it is working again. Is there something I can check or is this a sign that I need to save for a new frig.

SOURCE: Fridge leaking oil on the bottom right side

OK, usually if you see an oily substance that you are sure is not from the fridge contents it's oil from the sealed system. When a leak in the sealed system happens the refrigerant gas leaks out and the lubricating oil also leaks out. I'm afraid you may be in this situation. As the refrigerant leaks out the cooling efficientcy drops off quickly and eventually there is no cooling at all. You would have to use a refrigerant leak detector "sniffer" to locate the leak and then have a certified company repair the unit. Sadly, the cost to do a compressor replacement and leak repair is 2/3's or more the cost of a new fridge...

Had trouble finding a diagram with this model # but most common defrost problems are bad defrost thermostat, timer/control board, or a little more rare is the defrost heater.

SOURCE: Water Freezing in bottom of Freezer and dripping out front of freezer door

this could either be a blocked drain from the freezer not allowing defrost water to escape or the defrost heater failing to turn on due to a faulty defrost heater or defrost timer not enabling the water to escape

That sounds like the start relay is buzzing. Unplug and lets check the compressor to see how hot and if too hot to hold your hand on the top of compressor we need to leave it unplugged until we find out if the start relay, start capacitor, overload or if the condenser fan stops after running a short while. Why is there water coming out from under the refrigerator?

There may be a few sources for water coming out of your unit:
1 the ice maker connection has failed or been damaged by freezer being closed with too much in it. I would also check the filter for the unit. On mine it is in the upper right corner of the top.

2 The defrost circuit is in overdrive. If your freezer door is not completely closed this will ice up the coils and your defrost circuit will melt more ice than it can get rid of. Check and make sure you are getting a good seal on your freezer door. If you take everything out of the freezer you may be able to get under the back cover and look at your coils (looks like a aluminum radiator ) in back. It is only 4 screws but you made need to remove your icemaker also. Might not be a bad idea just to check it out anyway.

I would start with the easiest, make sure your door seal is good and change your filter

The defrost cycle seems to stay on too long-ice already made will start melting & then refreeze into 1 big chunk. Eventually the "melt" will build up in the bottom of the freezer & will eventually...

if think your defrost cycle is ok . there is a defrost terminator that controls the heater at 50 deg in the back of freezer , the problem is the water delivery tube is iceing oven and causing water to run down the back of freezer wall . change the tube to newer style. it will be open on the top side . they work better. and the water valve may be leaking through. and may have to be changed .. ,,

The freezer frosts and ices up so bad it plugs the holes that cool the refrigerator. Then this morning there was a puddle of water in front of it

Hello and Welcome to Fixya,

This is one of the most common problems in most of the refrigeration appliances. What’s going on here is that the condensate drain hole in the freezer gets plugged with ice. Once this happens, all the frost melted off the evaporator during subsequent defrost cycles can no longer drain and so spreads out on the freezer and dribbles down and also chokes other components. Here are the instructions that you need to follow inorder to get rid of the problem:

  • Unplug the refrigerator and pull everything outta the freezer, and I mean everything.
  • Remove the bottom panel inside the freezer so you can see the condensate trough in the back of the freezer.
  • Notice that the condensate trough is filled with ice– all that has to be cleared out.
  • Take it easy back there, delicate parts are exposed– don’t start hacking at it with an ice pick because there are chances that you’ll just end up puncturing the evaporator and you’ll turn a simple, inexpensive repair into a majorly expensive one.
  • Use hot water to drain all the frosted ice that is visible.
  • Re-place all the units removed during the process.
  • Once all the ice is cleared away and the condensate drain opening is cleared, you are done.

Best of Luck,

Please do rate my solution, If found helpful.

Unit doesn't work when icemaker is on- Kitchen Aid Superba

that is unusual for the ice maker to cause it not to cool, but definitely not unheard of. if the fill tube to the ice maker, or ice maker itself, is leaking down the back of the freezer, behind the evaporator cover, it would form ice around the evaporator fan motor. this would cause the fan not to run, and the temp in the freezer and frige would rise. the ice would melt when it went into defrost, but then build up again. you should remove the rear panel in freezer and see if you see any ice build up around the fan blade, and if so, find where it is coming from. I hope this is the case for you. much cheaper than a compressor or new frige if it is. let me know if you have further questions. good luck, shane.

Model #PSS26PSSA SS Freezer frequently defrosts and refreezes. When this occurs, the entire ice bin melts into the freezer compartment and refreezes in puddles. Is this a common issue with this model and...

Absolutely not ! There are two types of defrost systems - timer (which relies on compressor run time) and adaptive (newer models) which relies on sensors and an electronic control and will defrost as needed...... During a defrost cycle your comrpessor and evap fan should be off, everything off - and no, a defrost cycle will NOT thaw your food in the freezer, not even your ice should melt ! To me this sounds like a defrost control problem - First thing service should check is your defrost timer and its components (control board, limiter, defrost thermostat, etc.) something is definately wrong.

Now with the advice above I am assuming that before the defrost cycle kicks in your freezer temp was in the normal range 10F and colder (0F is optimal) and refrigerator section cooler than 40F (optimal 34F). If so, then you should not have melting ICE in your freezer.

Puddle/ice in freezer compartment of my side by side fridgedaire. have chipped out the ice twice and blow dried everything to get rid of any ice jams. ice puddle comes back in a few hours

Check and see if your box is level. Levelling of your box, may solve your problem?. In some cases, the box isn't level, and the water from the icemaker spills into the freezer. If you don't have an icemaker, the evaporator drain could be clogged? When the evaporator defrosts, the water has to drain into the very bottom and outside of the freezer into a drain pan. If the drain is clogged, the water will drain into the freezer. Good luck. I hope this helped?

My jenn air side by side has water puddling in the bottom of the freezer section. I turn off the water supply going to the icemaker etc. still puddles. Is their a condensation line that could be clogged...

sounds like a drain clog in the freezer compartment above. remove the freezer rear panel and totally defrost the evaporator area, directly under the evap you see( under all taht ice) a small drain hole that has become frozen over, try defrosting with either a hair dryer( not a heat gun too much heat youl melt everything) or by pouring hot water donw the drain until you get a free flow of water down the tube. after its clear reassemble and you should be fine
