This type of cartridge has the printing head in them - the possibility that all 3 ones are clogged is extremely low. If you get a bad printing with them it's because the heads are incorrectly commanded - either the pin array that transfer the command is damaged and they will have to be cleaned and fixed or the processor of the printer is dead, and the printer with it.
YOU SHOULD USE HP 21 BLACK INK CARTRIDGE FOR BLACK PRINTING.IF YOU USE 22 COLOUR CARTRIDGE YOU WILL GET ONLY GREAY PRINTING ONLY.I AM RIGHT?IF YOU USE COLOUR CARTRIDGES MAY YOU WILL GET MONEY LOSE. BECOS IT WILL FINISH EARLY.BLACK INK COST IS LESSTHAN COLOUR INK CARTRIDGES. SO YOU SHOULD BUY BLACK CARTRIDGE FOR REAL BLACK PRINTING.
You're just going to have to keep printing until you see which cartridge is getting dry. It'll be either the black one or the colour one. This way you won't buy the wrong cartridge. If you print black text and it starts to come out grey then it's the black cartridge that needs to be replaced. The same with colour, if the picture looks faded then you'll need a new colour cartridge.
In my case this happened with black cartridge out of ink, colour cartridge low; replaced black: had permanent alignment problem, though test print looked OK; wouldn't print black. Replaced colour cartridge, then it all worked OK, straightaway!
Most times during a refill if you leave the cartridge out for any length of time the ink dries on the printhead or nozzels and wont allow the cartridge to print.
You can clean it manually with rubbing alcohol or try to use the printhead/cleaning feature built into the maintenance software installed on your computer.
Most times you will have to replace the ink cartridge.
Many printers always use a small amount of each color even if you are only printing black, to prevent the color nozzles from drying out and getting clogged (and, it forces you to buy more ink, which is a profit center for printer manufacturers)
For this reason, some printers will not work if ANY of the cartridges are empty.
It should work again if you replace the color cartridge. Make sure to select "black ink only" or the option to print in black and white or grayscale to minimize color ink usage. It may still use a little, but that's OK.
If a cartridge is expended, you must replace it to be able to print. If a cartridge is low, you can continue printing until a cartridge needs replacement. You cannot print or copy when an ink cartridge is expended even if the other cartridges are not expendedI have come across this issue many times and unforunately you have to replace the colour carts in order to continue to use the printer.
in your printer u need both cartriges inseted in the printer.u cannot install 1 in your printer it will not function.
clean the brown dotted circuit of the cartridges and check out if it is working.or the replacement of both the cartridges is necessary as the message is replace the ink cartridge.
if u get a message of replace black then u have to replace black.
if the message is replace colour the u have to replace colour.
if ust replace cartridges then replace both 1 by 1 .it will work properly after replacement.thanks.
its ok I solved it! I didn't realise that all the photo cartridge does is gloss over the colour picture produced by the colour cartridge. I simply had to replace the colour cartridge which had run out, so now its all working perfectly!!
