Try to use fresh batteries, and push the barrel in and out when it turns on to see if the 'binding' of the focusing gear can go away when you do this manipulation of the barrel.

If the error continues, maybe the camera needs service by Canonusa.com.

I could not, unfortunately, find a reference for an a450 on the website, though. Is that an older model?

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

In the compartment where the batteries go, there is another smaller watch battery, pull out the watch battery, and re install, and that should fix your lens error, I have a Canon powershot A700 that was getting the same error code and it works just fine now!!
