Help! WD World Book, doesn't start up.

Hello All, This is my first post, I hope I am able to solve the issue with your assistance.

I have a WD World Book 500gb. Tried to log in from the office, mionet shows as offline. Went home, looked at the box, blue light is on, so I turned it off, unplugged it as well to try and get this guy going again. Thus far, almost 20 mins, no blue light.

Help!

Thank you kindly, C.Aguas

    I have the same problem. Blue light on but not recognized by computer. I shut the drive off and now it won't turn on. It makes sounds like it's going to turn on but after about 15 seconds it stops and it doesn't turn on.

    The WD World Book does not turn on at power up.

    It doesn't help waiting or unplugging cables...

    Software access to my 1TB WD World Book failed; the light was on, but wouldn't turn off when the button was pushed in spite of several attempts spanning an hour. I unplugged the cord, plugged it back in and now the light won't come on, but the drives sound like they are spinning.

If this is western digital world edition

Download the computer software for your Western Digital My Book World Edition if you don't have it installed on your computer.

The software can be downloaded on the Western Digital website.

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=118&lang=en

Install the software to your computer.

Go to the "Start" menu.

Click "All Programs," the "Western Digital" folder and then "My Book World Edition Software" to launch the software.

Switch to the "System" tab. Click either the "Restore Configuration" or "Full Restore" button on the tab, depending on your My Book World Edition drive.

Click the "Browse" button, select the factory settings default restoration point, and then "General Restore" to return the unit to factory settings, or click "Full Restore" and then "Restore Factory Default," again depending on your specific My Book World Edition device.

The unit powers off, all data is erased from the hard drive and the My Book is returned to factory settings.

Hope this helps

Defrag a wd world book

The file system used by the WD My Book World unit is Linux based and does not fragment in the same ways that Windows users are used to dealing with. You will not need to worry about fragmentation.

If you are interested in a more geeky, but still somewhat simple explanation at http://geekblog.oneandoneis2.org/index.php/2006/08/17/why_doesn_t_linux_need_defragmenting

Happy computing! :D

WD My Book 1TB, not recognised by XP

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

A couple of ideas:
  • initially, confirm that it is the PC's USB ports that is the issue by trying the WD on another PC;
  • try plugging in a flashdrive, camera to your PC's USB port;
  • if it has been verified that the WD works in other PCs and that the USB port of your computer works, then it could be a registry entry.
Please open "regedit":
  • go to HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\USBstor;
  • check the value of the DWORD "Start" it should be 3;
  • If the DWORD "Start" does not exist, pls create it. Right click, New, DWORD value, Start, Value Data = 3.
Incidentally, there is Microsoft KB about disabled/disabling USB here.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Acces denied

If you have linux experience and are up for a bit of hacking, here is a solution to your problem:

I bought a 1Tb MyBook World Edition, and it was little better than a doorstop because of the "Access Denied" bug. However, now it runs like a dream.

Far far better than WD Technical Support.

PROBLEMS WITH MY WD BOOK

Hi, This post might be of some help/idea... http://www.fixya.com/support/t191153-device_recognized The only difference is your model uses Western Digital and not Seagate. Yours can still be recognized but Windows consider it non-formatted. First try a data recovery software and another storage medium where you can copy the files if you're successful in the recovery. Good luck and kind regards.
