Question about Shimano Cycling

1 Answer

I have a Fuji Newest 1.0 with tiagra shifter. The bike shifters shift to the inside. HOW do you get them to shift the other way. Sure there's a simple answer, but I got a generic owner's manual and should have test drove it first.

Buell blast clutch position

The Blast Has a slip style shifter assembly - which means that it DOES NOT have teeth that grab the shift shaft that comes out of the case. Instead it has a aluminum 'drum' that the shifter clamps to. This 'drum' allows the shifter to slide up and down on it until you find a spot you like and clamp it down. Since the shifter lever doesn't have any teeth it can slip on the drum. the drum has the teeth and it also goes in between the shift shaft and the shifter lever. It is the ONLY bike I have ever seen with this style of shifter too. Make sure the shift lever isn't cracked or has ANY oil on or inside of it. It will cause it to slip. Another thing to consider - if you had a bent shifter - that means that the shifter hit something very hard. That could also mean that the shifter might have transferred that shock into the transmission causing internal damage.

1988 sportster 883 transmission wont come out of first shifter moves without pulling in the clutch

Check the shifter where it connects to the shifter shaft and make sure there isn't a problem there. If the shifter shaft is moving, you should be able to rock the bike backwards and forwards with the engine off and shift through all the gears going both up and down without pulling the clutch. If you cannot do this, you have a problem inside the transmission with the shifting mechanism. The transmission will probably have to be pulled to determine exactly what the problem is.

Good Luck

With Shimano 6603 Group can you use Shimano 5703 shifters, or even triple Tiagra shifters?? Thanks for the reply

The answer is yes and no.

The 5703 shifters will work both derailleurs and match the 6603 group as they are both 10spd.

The Tiagra will not work because it is 9spd, it will functionally shift the derailluer but you will not be able to line up the gearing.

The rear shifter needs to match the number of gears on the back (cassette) in the case of the 6603 group that is 10spd, so you can use any 10spd rear shifter from shimano. The Tiagra is either an 8spd or 9spd depending on the model and will not work with the cassette. You can use a 6603 rear derailleur with a Tiagra group, as long as the shifter and cassette are both the same.

2010 Fuji Newest 4.0 Road Bike user manual

The Fuji Newest does not use any special user manual. You can go into any bike shop and they will have an owners/ users manual for a similar road bike. The manuals are written generically so they only produce one for all there models of road bikes.

Most shops will also be happy to give you a brief demonstration of how to use the brakes and shifters, in fact the shop where you recieved the bike will most certainly be happy to provide this service. I have never heard of a shop charging for taking a few minutes to show a rider how to safely operate their bike, and having some one show you on your bike is preferable to a generic manual.

There are also some decent resources on youtube that demonstrate how to shift and brake your road bike, Have fun with your bike.

In the US. Performance bikes is a large Fuji dealer that always has extra manuals, if your near one.

Hi, Just bought a new bike with shimano tiagra gearing. However the gear shifters doesn't seem to work. There is no movement in the cables when I try to shift gears. Do you have any idea for a quick fix or...

You don't mention which shifter(s) malfunction or if you're even pedaling the bike while shifting (I make NO assumptions).

If you operate the inner shift lever (NOT the brake lever) on each side through several clicks that should RELAX any tension in the shifter cables. Then if you pick the bike up and pedal it forward a couple of turns the front shifter should drop the chain the the lowest chainring and the rear derailleur should shift out the the smallest cog.

With the bike suspended (say, hanging from a low tree branch by the tip of the seat) you should be able to turn the cranks and manually pull sideways on either exposed shifter cable where it runs down along the downtube then release it.

This should cycle each respective derailleur through its entire range. If the cables don't travel sufficiently in this manner, the shifters will never make them do it either.

Perhaps you could CALL the Bike Shop and they would talk you through a quick operational check.

Shimano tiagra 9 speed shifters how to change gear

Go to http://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/index.jsp

Search in drop down list to go to all tiagra items and identify your particular components. Shimano are good at numbering their parts and you should find the number you seek on the bicycle component. You will usually be able to download an exploded parts diagram and service instructions. The service instructions are prefixed by the letters SI.

Shifting problems/Tiagra STI Flightdeck

It sounds like the limit screws on your derailleur body are out of adjustment. They are usually small phillips head screws on the body of the front and rear derailleur that limit the travel of the derailleur body on the rear so that the chain cannot get shifted into the spokes or off the smallest cog into the frame. On the front they prevent the chain from shifting off the inside or outside cogs. There are good articles under front and rear derailleur adjustments at this site:http://www.parktool.com/repair/byregion.asp?catid=53 I hope this helps.
