Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

Hi There I have got a Kirby 2 HG vaccum cleaner which is around 20 years old now. It was going really well until last week when one of the capacitors which are connected to the brushes blew up. There is two capacitors one for each brush. One of them completely blew to bits and the other one is still intact. My question is are they the same size and where do I get a new one from. I know it is an old machine, but I would like to fix it and get it going again. Any tips???

    Hi Don

    Thanks for trying to help.

Just found out today how the electrical configuration is set up.

When I say capacitor I mean an electronic component which charges and discharges really quickly.

They are put into the circuit to minimise arcs and sparks.

As it turns out there is only one capacitor and it is part of the switch assembly. Obviously put there to prevent a spark forming every time the machine is switched off.

What I thought was the remains of one capacitor was actually the end cap of a capacitor shell that was still zippy tied to it's holder.

What I would need to fix the problem is a new switch assembly and I wonder how much it would be worth.

The old Heritage ll HG also need a new fan so all in all it looks like the old girl is up for retirement.

No one seems to be selling actual electrical spare parts for a Kirby. They only sell fan kits, new bags and the like.

Have done a search on the net but haven't found any yet!

Are you aware of anyone selling electrical spare parts for a Kirby?

Checked out the websites you gave me, but there is no electrical spare parts posted there. Is it a case of having to call them and order it over the phone?????

I live in Australia by the way.

Probably, by the time I add up new parts and shipping cost it will cost more that a good second hand machine is worth these days.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
Yes, I think you are referring to the carbon brushes for the Kirby II HG and it is a good idea to change both of them @ the same time to be able to wear the same. Having 2 different sizes could affect the motor performance and the carbon brushes / capacitors and it would wear uneven. If you are referring to the brushroll, replace it with a genuine Kirby brushroll and to do a belt change every 4 to 6 months. Please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area & in the yellow pages, if not call the factory or the website listed below:

Replace coupling to Kirby G4

Hi There,
I think what you are asking is how to fit a new hose machine end, (hard plastic bit that connects the hose to the kirby body) to the rest of the corrugated hose?.
If this is right it does vary with the really old models but for the G3 and newer which is everything up to about 20 years old it is the same and quite easy.
All you have to do is heat the end of the hose up with hot water - not boiling or you will shrink the hose and kind of twist the new end on. You will need to have removed the old one first which is the same just heat up and twist off.

Wont **** properly. is just moving dirt around. i have a G6 i unclogged it changed the bag. dont know what else to do.

With a Kirby that's around 10 years old, there's a good possibilty the fan is worn or broken. You can purchase one online (http://www.elikirbyclub.com/category_93/Kirby-GSix-Fan.htm for $17.55 plus shipping and handling) or at a Kirby store.
Instructions for replacing the impeller can be found at the following site.

No suction at all on my Kirby just cleaned the brush, etc... had a hard time getting the belt back on... really hate this vacuum cleaner

I have a kirby Diamond series and the 'green light' on the upper right side (while standing behind the vaccum) does not come on and when it doesn't come on I noticed that it does not sound as though it is picking up at all. I have changed the belt, placed a new bag in it and made sure that there is no clogs. What else could it be?

Kirby G5 rear wheels lock up completely when in "Drive"

When wheels lock when vacuum is OFF - it is normal. If it happens when Kirby is ON then there are a few things that may have gone wrong

Primary drive belt is broken or something is wrong with plastic gears. See how to check the primary drive belt HERE.

If it is fine and gears are spinning - then something must be wrong inside the transmission. Parts for tech drive are not available from manufacturer so you are on your own. It is not really complicated - 2 clutches that engage and disengage depending which direction you push the vacuum. But if something in there is broken - you have to get a new tranny. It is not like getting a transmission for a truck but it still will set you back by about 100 $.

Good Luck
Rocky
