I had the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite A215 with the same Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K17F ATA drive installed. As mentioned by one of the others, my problem was also instigated by installing iTunes, and deleting the upper and lower limit registries worked beautifully. Thanks!

Six months ago I bought a Toshiba Satellite A205 and it was full of problems. Unfortunately I couldnt afford to be without a computer for several weeks while they ineptly tried to figure out what the problem was so(for some reason when I click on anything an unrelated window will pop up) I put up with it until today.

Today I went out and bought a brand new Toshiba Satellite 305 so I could finally put the other one in the shop. Everything seemed great until I got ready to start loading programs. Thats when I discovered that the D:/ wasn't there! And when I looked in the hardware section of the Control Panel I eventually saw the same error message everyone else here saw. How funny that the replacement computer is in worse shape than the one it was supposed to replace! What are the chances that something is wrong with EVERYONE of Toshiba's Satellite systems?

I can honestly say I have bought my last Toshiba product! Fool me once shame on you....fool me over and over again then I deserve it!

I found the solution at microsoft support website, but i just found in portuguese, so im gonna try to explain how to solve it.
u need to go to start menu and then on the star search u need to search for "regedit"
when u are inside the regedit, look for this subkey "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"

on the right side u need to del 2 subkeys

"upperfilters" and "lowerfilters"

close the regedit and restart the windows.

hope i can help u guys. it worked for me.

I have the same problem and found a solution that works beautifully

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Startpioneer dvd-rw dvr-k17a - vistastartbutton.jpg, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

securityshield.jpg If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. 2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM. 3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete. 4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry. 5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete. 6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry. 7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer. Note After you remove the UpperFilters registry entry and the LowerFilters registry entry, you may lose functionality in certain programs such as CD recording programs. In this scenario, you must reinstall any affected programs. If the problem recurs, contact the program vendor to determine whether an update is available for the program.

Just go to regedit and find this sub root " HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 " and delete the upper and lower filters, just be aware that if you use the registry optimization software then this problem will result again and you have to do the same thing again , good luck

The solution is as TMYERS12 states and is not that hard. My Toshiba laptop had the same problem and was under warranty so I rang Curry's. They knew about the problem and suggested I delete the registry keys. It's caused by downloading additional software - mine was caused by ITUNES adding additional code to VISTA!!!

Driver for Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K16D

Suggest you try this, Chris;

Go to Device Manager.

[WinXP:
Start > Right-click on My Computer > Left-click on Properties at the bottom of the list > Left-click on the Hardware tab. Left-click on Device Manager

Win Vista/ Win 7:
Windows logo button > Right-click on Computer > follow the above ]

When Device Manager loads click on the + sign, to the left of DVD/CD-ROM drives.
Right-click right on the name of the optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)

Left-click on Uninstall.

A Microsoft 'squawk box' will come up; "Warning you are about to uninstall this device"
It's OK. Click on OK.

Now close all windows, go back to your desktop screen.
Restart your computer.

(WinXP: Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart
Win Vista/Win 7: Windows logo button > Restart )

When Windows fully loads you will get a pop-up, out of the system tray, "Found new hardware device", and perhaps another one, "Found Pioneer DVD-RW"

Windows has the habit of losing drivers. Let's see if this 'slaps Windows around'.

Regards,
joecoolvette

[Driver: Small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with a device.

Windows XP/Vista/7 is the O/S, the optical drive is the device ]

I bought a replacement DVD-RW-DVR from Toshiba, but I do not have a driver.I'm using Window7. "They sent me a Pioneer DVD-RW-DVR-K17LF ATA device.

Attach the new drive as instructed.
Make sure the notebook has an internet connection and switch it on normally. Windows should recognize the unit and ask you for a driver. Click install automatically. It may then download the driver and install it.
If none of this happens, keeping the internet connection open, right-click My Computer/ Hardware/Device manager and the DVD will appear there with a question mark meaning it is uninstalled. Click on it and choose to install a new driver. Windows should do the rest. Good luck.
There may be a third way to download the driver from Toshiba and install it manually.

Toshiba dvd burner problem

Try unistalling the dvd drive in device manager. Go to my computer click on view system information. Then click on hardware, then click on device manager find your dvd drive then right click and unistall a warning window will popup click ok. Once you unistall it restart the system and windows will find new device and reinstall the device driver. Then check if this fixes the problem. if this dosnt fix the problem try removing the dvd drive from the laptop and reinsert it. Sometimes the connection losses contact with the terminals.

Hi, the error code that you have on the CD/DVD drive is a known issue from Microsoft. The error code means "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)".
Since you are using a Toshiba laptop; you can click on this link http://tinyurl.com/toshibadvd and click on the repair tool on the resolution. This is applicable on both Windows Xp and Vista and will delete the upper/lowerfilters on the registry.

In case that the error code still exist you need to manually delete the upper/lowerfilters under the registry by clicking on this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us . You need to go the "Run" screen then type in "regedit" and click OK or hit the enter key.

This will surely fix the error code that you have on the CD/DVD drive.

Thanks
