Well usually with the synaptic touchpad is that they come with there system tray icon to tell us the status...
Basically if in the right hand corner of most OS and depending on your settings you will see the notification icons...
In this section you should see the Synaptic Icon, usually a red square with a with Strike going through kinda with a curve in it...
IF you see it then, you mouse should be fine and it could become a hardware issue, if it is not there...
Go to Start > Control Panel > Device Manager...
Go to "Mice and other pointing device"
Should now see the synaptic.
Right Click on it uninstall, DO NOT check box that says DELETE the driver.. then restart your system after successful uninstall and all should be working...
IF not go back to the device manager with above steps...
then once there, Right Click on "mice and other pointing device"
then Scan for hardware changes and it should use windows update get it for you....
