Question about Canon PowerShot A70 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Now when I take a photo under any setting (auto P M etc) with my old faithful Cannon Powershot A70 it just gives me a white picture. However I can still take perfectly good and well coloured videos with it. What might be happening? Is there setting that is wrong or is part of the camera kaput do you think?

Are you check ISO settings? When a picture is taken, the CCD is struck by light coming through the camera's lens. Each of the thousands or millions of tiny pixels that make up the CCD convert this light into electrons. The number of electrons, usually described as the pixel's accumulated charge, is measured, then converted to a digital value. This last step occurs outside the CCD, in a camera component called an analog-to-digital converter.

In order to correct this issue, the repair facility needs to replace the CCD. This is not something you may do on your own; check this article for additional details: Bad CCDs. This, isn't a good new, but hope helps to solve it.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Did you change any settings (ISO, white balance, exposure compensation, etc.)? Go into the setup menu and try to find an entry for "reset". if you find it, reset your camera.

My camera displays a "white screen" when i take photos "outdoors" or during daytime outside

Are you sure that you are in full "auto" mode when you are taking your pictures? Make sure that the mode selector is set to the first red camera (without the M) right next to the little blue arrow.

If you already are in full auto, a stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see the following for further info and a simple fix that may help:

http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2009/05/simple-fix-for-stuck-shutter.html

Your camera is not capable of taking 15 second exposures. Instead try putting it in manual mode, turn off the flash, take it in a darkened room, take the picture, and open the battery door while the red and yellow lights are blinking. Give it several tries, but note that the chances may be very slim for success as the shutter symptoms suggest that it is stuck open.

Digital camera, sometimes no image.

It is a failure of faulty CCD image sensor. cannon has recall and will pay for repair and shipping when I called this #.

What is the best colour setting to have on the 5d?

Hi
This all depends on what format you are shooting. For RAW this does not matter as you will be able to change the white balance setting on the computer under your programs white balance settings as the main thing.
For shooting in .jpg probably a good general setting should be cloudy for outdoors. Gives a warmer picture. and for other people the AWB (Auto White Balance) may work fine. Again it depends really on your taste.

If the images are washed out it could be you are shooting in RAW, as this format does not alter any info and is stored on the card as it was taken. .jpg does process the image adding saturation, sharpness etc.

A quick fix for some has been to use the settings under 'Picture Style' and changing thes to suit the subject. Faithful will record things as is and not apply and adjustments and will look a little washed out.

NOTE:
Shooting in RAW gives you complete control over your image but does mean you need to process the shots later on you computer to get them as you saw them.

Note 2:
You are getting the fish Eye effect as on the 24-105 as you are using this on the 24mm end of the Zoom. (Wider end). Try moving it up through to 105.

Hope this helps

Sounds like you might be in luck. These symptoms sound very much like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Canon Powershot A70 Digital

When I got my A70 I got a CD with the software. If I connect the camera with USB cable to the computer, set the little lever on the back for the camera to display whatever pictures are in it, and turn the camera on, the computer recognizes the camera, opens the software and leads me through the process.
If you have some other photo software than the Canon software, it should still work.
