Question about Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 Graphic Card

1 Answer

Monitor turns on briefly then off

Dear Tech Support,

I hope someone can help me out because the guys at my local geek squad couldn't figure out the answer :(. My dell monitor will turn on only briefly during the windows startup and then turn off. The computer meanwhile is still running. This occurred after windows did one of those automatic updates. My monitor works just fine with another computer hooked up to it so it's not the monitor. When the guys at geek squad hooked it up to their monitor the same problem recurred. I have a strong feeling it has to do with the driver. I have the NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 and running windows xp. I have tried the following so far without much success. Uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it and the problem still recurs. The only time the monitor will turn on is on safe mode and also when I delete the driver and restart the computer and it uses the generic vga mode. However, after it detects my graphics card and installs the driver again, the problem recurs. I have a Dell Dimension 8300. If I can get this to work, the geek squad guy told me to come back to share the solution lol. Thanks for all your help.

Tony

I am having a similar problem with my notebook from Toshiba. I spent all day on the phone or at the local store for other reasons - and the only thing the Geek squad told me was they can send it out and have it looked at which would take about a week. Oh and the cost could be as high as $300!!!

The screen on my laptop isn't working - but if I hook my desk top monitor to it there is no problem. Very confused about it all.

Both of you need to do a complete over write restore and reprogram to recover the video card then install an older video driver program with the ability to lock out all updates. lala linda

BEST BUY GEEK SQUAD ROUND-UP

I can confirm that this level of incompetence is quite common. It is Best Buy's standpoint that Geek Squad is an extension of their sales strategies, thus their hiring practices reflect that standpoint. Many Geek Squad "Agents" are hired or transfered to Geek Squad based upon their merits as sales people, NOT technicians. This strategy, combined with the pathetically low pay level (which any certified or experienced technician would laugh at) results in untrained staff programmed to follow certain sales strategies. In my experience, many of my fellow employees were on the same technical level as the customers across the counter seeking support.

Best Buy did settle with Winternals / Sisinternals and integrated many of their tools into Geeks Squad's authorized repair disk (Much of which is purely automated). At some level, Best Buy has internally recognized that their Geek Squad staff is mostly unqualified and have catered their corporate licensed / developed software to reflect the situation. This not only showed Geek Squad's incompetency (again) but also shows how news media is more interested in scaring you than actually helping you. It's good that the big chains got this bit of negative press on a local station but you should also applaud the store that did it for free - at least post their name and address and show an interview with the owner or clerk.

Mom and pop shops are usually run by people that are hobbyists first and business-folk second. Whenever someone at my company asks for personal computer help that I don't care to deal with I send them to a small shop in our town - one with Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Netscape Navigator and Word Perfect stickers are mostly-faded on the window. I know they'll be treated honestly and fairly. No charge just to examine a computer to add onto the actual repair.

It's sad how many people/companies are more interested in making the most money from a problem instead of trying to solve it fairly.
and LASTLY "1st thing that video is at least 8 years old I remember seeing it when I was young in highschool."
Perhaps you are thinking of the PC World investigation of major retail computer service departments? I remember reading it long ago:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3764-6/pc_repair_ripoff.html
The article is from Mid 1998. A damaged IDE cable was part of the problems on their test PCs.

From the article:
"Of 55 problems tested across 20 stores, a total of 30 were misdiagnosed, ignored, or went otherwise unfixed. Best Buy and Computer City each missed on 9 of 15 tries."

THE REAPIR WE WERE TALKING ABOUT WAS A 10 TO 20 DOLLAR FIX :()

AND

A confidential settlement has ended litigation initiated by Winternals over copyright infringement regarding Geek Squad's use of its ERD Commander software.

The lawsuit should end following a July 7th motion from Winternals lawyer David Weaver, who cited a settlement agreement reached between the company and Best Buy, which owns Geek Squad.

Instead of a lengthy lawsuit, Winternals now has a three-year agreement in place with Best Buy. This will permit its Geek Squad of tech assistance personnel to lawfully use licensed programs from Winternals and Sysinternals. This includes the ERD Commander system recovery tool.

The problems for Best Buy and Geek Squad started in February 2006. Winternals had conducted training sessions for Geek Squad employees, as part of its negotiations with Best Buy to license software for its 12,000 Geek Squad workers.

Then the negotiations ended abruptly. Coupled with the admission from employees of Geek Squad and Best Buy that they had been using unlicensed copies of ERD Commander, Winternals began to investigate.

They set up systems needing repair in multiple locations, and put calls in to Geek Squad for assistance. Geek Squad staffers either used unlicensed copies of ERD Commander, or had them in their possession.

In April 2006, Winternals sued in US District Court in western Texas for copyright infringement, circumvention of copyright protections systems, and misappropriation of trade secrets.

Envision G175 monitor goes on then goes black

This could be one of three issues:
1) Monitor is bad
2) cable is bad
3) video card is bad.

Try to plug the monitor into another computer or laptop and see if your current setup still shows black. If it now works, I'm pretty sure that it's your video card, seeing the other 2 components work fine for another computer. If it still doesn't work, then replace the cable and try again with the other computer. If the new cable doesn't fix the issue, then I think that it's monitor that's simply gone bad.
If it's the video card, you're going to have to open up the PC and replace and reinstall a new one. (do a Google search for help on this, but here's one link: http://www.directron.com/howtovideo.html) The install is easy, but if you've never done it before I'd recommend help from your local computer geek (someone from work?) or a computer place such as Geek Squad (located in Best Buy).

If this has helped, please give me the appropriate thumbs up! Thanks, and good luck!

Gateway PC screen blank, geek squad diagnosis motherboard issue

You could replace the motor board for less than $100 but I think the geek squad says the motor board is bad on every computer that doesn't start right up for them so I would have someone else look at it first. Or just get a new computer at walmart for like $300

Toshiba satellite is having issues

First thing to do is stop booting up the computer. This message means the Hard Disk Drive (HDD or "C Drive") has errors. Errors can mean disk corruption including bad sectors and/or physically damaged hardware inside the disk drive.
Since you are able to log into the computer, if even briefly, perhaps the HDD is what I like to call "fail-ING"; there may be hope of retrieving some of your data (pictures, etc). Ask your local Geek Squad Agent help you - if damage is severe, this is not necessarily something you can fix yourself (e.g. "fail-ED" HDD).
Remember, I said not to keep booting the computer - the more times you boot a "fail-ING" drive the less likely you will retrieve anything. If you insist, however, on a DIY method - you could learn more about the following:
1. New HDD installed
2. HDD Enclosure (USB)
3. Acronis Software
4. A nice drink and a couple of hours to clone the old HDD

OR 1. Geek Squad Agent
2. Credit Card/Checkbook

HINT: if you talk to a Geek Squad Agent and s/he can't explain Acronis software, find an Agent who can...
