Question about IBM Computers & Internet

Laptop WiFi card stopped working

I have a laptop running Windows 2000 Professional, and it has a Senao NL-2511CD Plus WiFi PC Card installed. Not long ago, the card worked perfectly, but I accidentally messed up Windows and had to re-install Windows. Ever since, the WiFi card hasn't worked once.

The Device Manager told me that the card cannot start due to a ''code 10'' error. If I change the resource settings, the computer asks to restart, and when it does, the card starts, but the settings window for the card says it can't communicate with the card's driver software.

If I re-install the driver software, the problem doesn't go away.

It's driving me insane since I want the WiFi to work again, and I can't buy a different card because my laptop's PC card slot is 16-bit, and I haven't found a single 16-bit WiFi card other than the one I have.

Yes, it's still running 2K Pro. Forgot to mention that.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to see if Windows could automatically find a better driver. I'll see, but it doesn't seem likely that I can replace the driver. I'll see if it works.

Actually, it said that the best driver was already installed, but it re-installed the driver and, at the moment, it seems to work, though there isn't a WiFi signal in the room I'm in to test it with, and the laptop's battery isn't charged so I can't move it around right now. I bet if I try it again, the card will suddenly fail after seeming to connect to the internet like it often does. It sort of works sometimes, and other times I boot the computer and it doesn't even realize the card is plugged in. Dunno, though - it might just be working.

It doesn't seem to be working. Also, I'm having a new problem now - the card connects to the internet, but as I try to bring up Firefox, it suddenly comes up with the message "unable to communicate with device driver" and the card turns off. The device manager says the card is fine, but the event viewer says something about the card malfunctioning and disconnecting from the internet improperly.

  • rusbus Jul 29, 2010

Actually, Windows Update isn't working. The message "internet explorer cannot connect to the internet", or something of that sort, comes up in the middle of the Windows Update page. And yes, my Ethernet connection is working. I am able to connect and browse through Firefox just fine.

  • rusbus Jul 29, 2010

If it matters, my laptop is as up to date as I could get it so far - it has Service Pack 4 and Update Rollup Pack 2. Is that up to date enough, or does it need anything else installed? Automatic updates won't work, so I have to update manually.

  • rusbus Jul 30, 2010

No luck. It still has some weird problem. It works for a moment, then comes up with the message "unable to communicate with device driver" like always. I don't know if there's much I really can do, short of re-installing Windows completely. I'm probably gonna hold off with that for a while, though. I have a LOT of programs installed.

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Well, again, if it doesn't work, connect your laptop to the internet via an Ethernet cord, and download any updates you find at Windows Update. Continually do that until no more updates show up.

Until you connect to Windows Update and fully update your laptop, I cannot help you further.

  • tgp1994 Jul 29, 2010

    Via Ethernet, that is.

  • tgp1994 Jul 29, 2010

Interesting, you're right, that is fully updated. Well, my last swing at this: here's the latest driver from the manufacture's website. Go ahead and download that, see if it will update over the current driver you have.

If that doesn't work, I honestly don't know what to tell you. Well, hope it works.

Your laptop has a "card" that provides this service. If it has never worked then the card is not installed. If it just stopped working then maybe the card has gotton loose or wet etc...

Is it possible to set up a wireless connection on a Presario 1275 laptop running Win 98?

Yes, but fairly difficult. Try to find a wireless pcmia card with teh original disk that should have a program that will install a utility and o the setup for you.

I want to have a wifi driver in my laptop so that i can connect to the internet through wifi.

Here is the page containing the info for your laptop and the drivers:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=443078&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=10&submit.x=5&lang=en&cc=us

Keep in mind that if you have windows xp on your laptop it won't have the drivers for the wireless card. If you have vista on your laptop then choose vista and then the driver for the wireless card will be in there. Just download it and install it. The laptop should recognize the card at that point.

Reconfigure wireless card

I believe he's wrong. But the wireless card which only does B needs to match the router which could be A,B, or G. And B has some serious range limitations. You also need to manually address the card or the router has to be configured for DHCP. Get past those issues and it should setup normally.
