This is a new feature in Internet Explorer 8 where all the different extensions of webpages (.htm, .asp, .com, .jsp, .pdf, etc) are denoted by a common .url extension.

When you open the list of exported bookmarks, you will see all the bookmarks or links have .url extension.

When you hover the mouse pointer on the bookmarks list (.url links), you will see the actual address/ link in the status bar at the bottom of the IE window. Also, if you click on the links, it will open the actual webpage.

Hope this answers your query. Thanks for using FixYa

Thanks for that answer but that's not really my problem. When I then import the bookmarks into a bookmark management program, I still have the .url extension and some of the names of the bookmarks are weird. Is there a way to get rid of the .url extension completely? I've gone back to IE7 since it was so annoying but IE7 keeps crashing. Thanks.

    Many thanks for the feedback.

As a workaround to this problem, you can use a bookmarks conversion tool to convert the IE8bookmarks to the format supported by your bookmarks management program.

You can download and install the free bookmarks conversion tool from:

In the program window, select the IE Favorites from the drop-down menu for "Bookmark Source" field. Then select Firefox/Firebird... from the drop-down menu for "Bookmark Target". Then browse the location to save the converted htm file and click Convert button.

Now the converted bookmarks list will not show the .url extensions and wil also be compatible with other browsers and bookmarks programs.

    Thanks once again.

Thank you for the reply. I don't seem to be able to load this software. Also, I export my bookmarks every day and then import them into a bookmark management program. Is this for every day use or just a one time application?

    Thanks for the reply.

This program can be used daily or as often as required.

    Thanks again

I download it but it won't install even after I try to extract the files. It says the folder is empty.

I downloaded the converter but when I try to use it, IE stops working.

The conversion process takes only a few seconds to complete. If the IE window becomes unresponsive, you can close the IE window before running the conversion program.

Wish you all the best and thanks once again.

It download but every time I try to open the program, IE stops working. I uninstalled and installed again and the same thing happens. Something must be incompatible with my sytstem.

  • paula64 Jul 31, 2010

It seems that this version of the program is incompatible with your IE browser.

You can download and install Transmute converter from:

In the program window select Internet Explorer as the source and Firefox 1-2 as Target (see attached image). Then browse and select the location to save the html file and click on Start button. Also, close the Internet Explorer window before exporting the bookmarks.

  • paula64 Jul 31, 2010

I'm confused. How could it not be compatible with IE?

You can download the Transmute setup files by clicking these links:

After downloading the files, run Setup.exe file.

I'm still not sure it worked. I will have to get back to you tomorrow if that is ok. Thank you.

How can I re-install but keep current bookmarks

In all Browsers, you can select EXPORT, usually from the FILE pulldown menu. If you export your bookmarks to a place on your hard drive and then copy to a memory stick, you can then IMPORT them when you are done upgrading the OS. Or you can export directly to a USB attached memory stick. In any case, export before you do the upgrade and then bring up the new browser, and import the bookmarks.

How can I transfer my bookmarks to a new computer?

The simplest method to transfer bookmarks between computers is by "signing in" to Chrome on the first computer. All of your Chrome browser data and preferences (including bookmarks) will be saved into your Google account, and that will be available whenever you sign in again on any other computer.

Here's how to sign in: In the Chrome web browser, click on the wrench icon (upper right corner), then select "Sign in to Chrome".

Then enter your Google account user name and password.

All of your Chrome bookmarks, extensions and other preferences will then be saved into your Google account online.

Then on your new computer, install the Chrome browser, and again "sign on" with the same Google account. Your Chrome bookmarks, extensions and other preferences will be retrieved from your Google account.

See also these Chrome help pages:

Alternatively, you can export your bookmarks from the Chrome browser on the old computer. Click on the wrench icon, select "Bookmark manager"; then select Organize > Export bookmarks. That will generate an HTML file. Copy that file to the new computer (e.g., by using a flash drive). Then on the new computer, install the Chrome browser, select "Bookmark manager"; then select Organize > Import bookmarks.

For more on bookmark export & import, see this helpfile:

Hope that's helpful.

How do i import my bookmarks from firefox to safari

Hello. To import your bookmarks from your Firefox browser, choose "organze bookmarks" on the Bookmarks drop down menu at the top part of your firefox browser (or alternatively use ctrl+shift+B). This will open another window labeled "Library"; where all your bookmarks will be shown. From the "import and backup" drop down menu select "export HTML.."; a window pops up that will allow you to export/save your bookmark to a preferred location (Desktop, preferably). After which, open Safari, hit "File" then choose "import bookmarks" and just select the file that you earlier saved.

Hi - My AVG scanner said that google chrome is corrupted - I would like to keep my bookmarks - so how can I go about repair - Right now it won't do much

If you can open Google Chrome you can go to the bookmarks and drag those to a new folder or your desktop. This will create a icon and when you click on it, it will open your favorites.
  1. Click the wrench icon chrome_toolsmenu.gif on the browser toolbar. Mac users: If you don't see the wrench icon, go to the menu bar at the top of your screen and clickBookmarks.
  2. Select Bookmark manager.
  3. Drag the favorites into new folder or desktop.

I have Windows XP and I am trying to copy my favorites onto a CD so I have a backup. I tried the import/export function but it is not working. Can they be copied to a cd or not?

You should be able to save you favorites to a CD. Try using the Import/Export Wizard again but, this time, save them to your desktop (don't try to export them directly to the CD).

I assume that you're using Internet Explorer. Open your Web browser then click File. Next, click Import and Export. This time when you get to the part where you choose a location to import the file, choose Desktop. Just click browse, when the window opens click Desktop then save.

After you have exported the file to your desktop, you should find a file on your desktop called bookmarks.htm. Next, copy (or send) this file to the blank CD. Once that's done, open the CD to see if the file was copied.

Hope this helps!
