We have the masterbuilt 700 series digital smokehouse. The wood chips are no longer burning - we have no smoke. Is the repair easy and cheap?

You probably have a bad heating element, Turn the unit on then turn your digital heat to 275 and open door the heating element should become cherry red. If it doesn't then you have a bad heating element. If you do not get a digital readout then you probably have a bad digital control panel. Both of those parts can be replaced, however i do not know the price for either of those parts. If you have neither working then you may have a short or broken wire that is not making a full curcuit. Good Luck

Model 20070410 masterbuilt smoker has the chip tray touching the element. will this burn out the element

Have the same "smokehouse" and faced the same issue today. First, ensure the Wood Chip Grate is rotated so the highest part of the Grate is to the left. Next , place the Water Bowl on the left (that highest part) and the Wood Chip Bowl w/ Lid to the right (balanced on the Grate so it doesn't fall through the supports.

Masterbuilt Smokehouse model 20070712 won't smoke wood chips at 225 degrees

I had this exact same problem with my Masterbuilt Smokehouse even when brand new. I notice there is some variability in the space between the top surface of the heating element and the bottom surface of the wood chip box. I measured about 1/4 inch between the two surfaces when the heating element was seated bottomed out and touching the wire grill below it. What I did to fix the problem was to gently (make sure everything is completely cold before doing this) lift up the end of the heating element farthest away from where it enters the enclosure just a little bit so that when you put the woodchip box in where it is supposed to go, the top surface of the heating element will now be in contact with the bottom surface of the woodchip box. This arrangement allows much greater heat to heat the wood chips during the part of the heating cycle when the heating element is on (naturally the heating element cycles on and off to regulate whatever temperature your are targeting for your food being cooked). Now, because of this contact, every time the heating element comes on, enough heat will enter the woodchip box to keep the chips ignited. My next step is I am going to put a small 1/4 inch thick piece of metal beneath the heating element and the rack that is under it to force the heating element to stay sitting 1/4 inch higher so that it is always in contact with the lower surface of the woodchip box. Making these improvements allowed me to continuously get smoke when the big smoke box was at 225 degrees F.
Without making this fix, the unit would stop producing smoke at 225. Hope this makes sense and helps you.

The smoker heats ok but no smoke

Assuming the smoker is heating up correctly to at least 225 - 250 Degrees F and you have loaded the wood chip holder with soaked wood chips, I can't think of any reason smoke is not being produced. Unless, you soaked the wood chips to long. 30 minutes is generally all that is necessary. The chips should start smoking before you place meat, fish or chicken in the smoker.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

The moist chips take a short time to dry so they take awhile to create the smoke. Is the holder for the water and wood chip boxes mounted correctly on the bottom rack, where the water is on left and wood chip smoker box on right side of smoker? Both items should be right above the heating element with barely any space between them.

I have purchased model #20050611. Can I smoke with wood chunks only and not use charcoal? Do I put the pre-soaked wood in the flame disk bowl or the water bowl? I am used to a double barrel wood smoker...

Wood only. No Charcoal. If you're using wood chips - soak them first. No sure wood chunks will work, as they will have a tendency to flare up & burn rather than smoke.

The presoaked wood chips go in the flame disc bowl, below the water bowl. The water bowl goes on the first shelf bracket from the bottom up.

I was going to send you a copy of your Owners Manual, but the Model Number you listed does not match up with any Masterbuilt Smokers?

Exactly how does the charcol come into play not exactly sure where to place it.

Debbie, unless you listed the wrong model number for your Masterbuilt Electric Smoker ... Electric Smokers don't use charcoal at all. They use wood chips, that are placed on the wood chip tray, just above the burner. The smoldering wood chips generate the smoke.

In case you've misplaced your Owners Manual. Here's a link to it that you can download and print for future reference. http://www.masterbuilt.com/pdf/manuals/07092010%2020070910%20Manual.pdf

Does this require charcoal? Can you use charcoal if not required

Normally,it's not recommended, as it can get to hot and burn out the bottom of the pan. Use chunks of wood designed for smoking instead. They'll burn longer and temp is easier to control.

How many hours do you you season the smoker initially before putting food items in it? do you put water in the pan for the initial smoke? and how many hours will it take to smoke a turkey?

It takes three hours on medium setting to season the smoker. During the last 3/4 hour of seasoning, add 1 cup of wood chips to the wood chip box. Let the chips soak in water for a half hour prior to using them. Once three hours is up, turn off, unplug and let the unit cool off.
