MY SEAGATE WILL POWER ON BUT WHEN I CONNECT IT TO THE PC IT DOES NOT SHOW UP AS A CONNECTED DRIVE. NO ERRORS OR INFORMATION REQUESTING DRIVERS. WOULD THE LACK OF DRIVERS CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. tHE POWER IS CONNECTED AND A USB IS CONNECTED FROM THE SEAGATE TO THE PC.

Hello,

When the USB cable is connected properly (and your computer is on) a light appears in the center of the Pocket Hard Drive. This light indicates that the Pocket Hard Drive is receiving power and is ready to use.
If this light does not come on and your Pocket Hard Drive isn't recognized by your operating system.
To see the files on the drive, double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. You will see your Pocket Hard Drive represented with the default "Removable Disk" label. After the system detects the drive, the light in the center of the drive becomes a drive activity indicator. This means the light will flicker on and off when your computer is accessing the drive.

Take care.

The light comes on when I power the Seagate, I also hear a few beeps coming from the Seagate as it's booting (few seconds). When I go to the my computer tab I still don't see the external hard drive as an icon. Could the hard drive be dead? Do I need to load drivers specific to this Seagate? It's a 500 GB that was given to me.

    Hello,

I will suggest you try to use your seagate with another system and see if it recognizes it, if it did not, it means the operating system on system can not recognize your seagate. I will advice you get the driver of the seagate, install on your system, with that, your seagate should be recognize because if the light in the center of the Pocket Hard Drive. This light
    indicates that
the Pocket Hard Drive is receiving power and is ready to use. which indicate it is still good. Try use it with another system and see if it works, if not, get the driver installed on your system.

    Take care.

External hard drives are plug and play, the drivers are build into windows.
IF the hard drive was connected when your computed crashed, and the hard drive was in use, it may have damaged it.
If it does not automatically connect to other PC's looks like it has been damaged

Seagate Drive is asking to be reformatted?

Yes your assuumtion is correct, you WILL loose all your data.

I have been there before.... and the outcome was not good.

If your PC will recognize the drive and give it a drive letter, you can run chkdsk (Check Disk) from the Run prompt to verify that the drive does not have damaged sectors. many times chkdsk will fix minor errors allowing you to access the drive again.
Click Start, Run CMD, enter, then type: X: (X being the drive letter of the Seagate) then type chkdsk /r and hit enter. If it completes 100% try accessing the drive again.
If you cannot acquire a drive Letter when you plug in the Seagate try going to Disk Management and assigning a drive letter.
Click Start, then Right click on My Computer and click Manage, then click Disk Management. See if your Seagate drive shows up in the list. If it does, right click on the larger box on the right and see if it will allow you to assign a drive letter.

Another option you may have is taking the hard drive out of the Seagate enclosure and either connecting it as a secondary drive in a desktop PC, or installing it into another external enclsure USB device, and try again to access the drive.

If none of these options work, your last option is to contract a Disk Recovery Service to acquire your data. They are usually very expensive.
