Question about GE GSS20IEP Side by Side Refrigerator

GE side by side keeps frosting up and fridge is not very cold

I have a GE side by side refrigerator (not sure of the model…not in front of it right now) that is not working properly. The freezer side keeps frosting up along the back wall and the fridge side is not very cold. I have the temperature settings on 5 for the freezer and 6 for the fridge. When I put them both at a 9 (the coldest setting) the freezer side frosted up very fast and the fridge side did not cool down any. I unplugged the unit and let it defrost and wiped it down, but when I turned it back on there was no change. Also the ice machine is not making any ice. I have looked through the owner’s manual and it is not helpful at all. I am looking for any advice in hopes that I can resolve this issue without having someone come out, as I do not think there is anything major wrong with it.

Sincerely,
C

It sounds like you have a defrost system problem. most commonly its your defrost heater on most GE ref. It can be located by removing the back panel of the freezer. If you remove the heater it can be tested for continuity at any parts distributor. I would also look for the quarter sized thermostat mounted at the top of the coils to see if it looks "popped" at the top. If it is then replace the thermostat. Hope this helps MJ

My side by side 23.6 cu. ft. no frost refrigerator is not freezing and the refrigerator is not getting cold enough. There's frost on the back wall inside freezer. It's a GE TFX24VR. What can I

usually that means your fridge thermostat is being blocked by items in your fridge, telling the cooling system to shut down. If your fridge and freezer are packed, the fridge might protect itself by shutting down the cooling system. Happened to us last Thanksgiving.

I have a Kenmore Cold Spot fridge, freezer on top. Fridge is warm, and freezer keeps freezing up on sides and bottom. I cleaned it all out, defrosted it, and it still freezes up and fridge still won't get...

Is this a self defrost model? Frost inside the freezer could be an air leak around the door gasket. Remove the back panel in the freezer and completely defrost the coils. Is the fan running in the freezer. That will make the frig not be cool. With the door closed peek in the gasket to make sure the light is shutting off, this will warm a frig also.

if u have frost build up in the freezer it will affect the temperature

Fridge and Freezer are Warm Ice is still being made

Hi - I just had the same problem on a 48 Monogram 1996 model.
The guys at the factory told my local service center that it was the main logic board ($200 for parts) and they replaced it, but that wasn't it.
It was the evaporator sensor. i don't claim to understand it all, but I think that the sensor is responsible for telling a heating element to turn on and defrost. If it does not do it's job, then frost builds up (You can feel the frost if you feel up in the freezer, up hight and in the front)) The frost keeps the cold air from getting to the fridge. Eventually the logic unit will freak out because ti is trying to keep the fridge cold, but the fridge send back that it is hot.
The repair guy may not want to replace the sensor because it is like an hour and half to get back in there. And it is a tight fit.

I have a GE GSS22JFPAWW Side by Side refrigerator. The coils keep freezing & so my fridge & freezer won't keep cold

If it keeps frosting up, there's a reason. This is a self-defrosting unit. The most common problem on that model is the defrost heater/harness assembly. It is part number WR51X10101. It can be checked easily with an ohm meter. This is quite possibly what ails your unit.
