Question about Garden

1 Answer

Starter Rope on Snapper Lawnmower no longer seemed to want to pull the crank. Took off the part with the rope and see that the rope is OK and that the automatic rewind of the rope is OK. What doesn't look right is the part that would fit into the crank has no way of interlocking with the crank to turn it. Not having seen it before it was broken it does not look broken to me. Can't tell what kind of engine it is. Only can supply Snapper serial # I see on the deck of the lawn mower.

The inside of the drum or wheel you might call it were the rope is attached to has centrifical arms with pads on them
As you pull on the rope to start it the arms move outward to apply pressure the the engines clutch plate so it will spin to start.
The pads are simply worn and need to be replaced

Hard pulling starter rope

You say Pull rope mechanism is ok, How do you know that? Ive's seen them get the rope a little off and gets caught being wedged into a small clearance. Is the rope wearing? I bet if you take it apart put a new nylon rope and some wd-40 in rubbing surfaces including the ratchet area it will be good as new. Crank bearing has to get really bad to effect pull. How is the spark?

How to replace starter rope in lawn mower

First assemble the following: Pliers, large vice grips, 'c' clamp or a bench mounted vise and new rope. Remove therecoil housing from top of engine. Turn it over, find the end of the broken rope and on pull it until it is fully extended but do not remove yet. While holding the rope extended place clamp device on the rope housing clamping the spool and housing. Be careful not to put too much pressure on the housing, just enough to hold the two pieces. Carefully remove old rope and thread the new rope through the small hole in the housing and into the slot in the pulley. Tie that end of rope into a knot to prevent rope from coming out. While holding other end of rope, carefully remove the clamp from the housing and slowly let the rope rewind into the housing. Replace rope housing onto top of motor. You take the top of the motor off with the starter, then rewind the spring, then is a good idea to replace the rope with a new one they sell rope at a lawnmower store, get 5 feet or more if the rope is up on the handle, take a piece of rope with you to get the correct size.
