Question about Computers & Internet

G4 upgrade MCE 16X DVD-R/RW SuperDrive, NewerTech MaxPower 7448 Single Processor G4 2.0GHz, 1.38 Gb sdram.  Everything fit and booted up well but I cannot get the superdrive to be recognized by my apple products  (iDVD, iMovie)  - which was why I upgraded - to get blazing speed on burning DVD's from iMovie.  And the iWorks '08 programs do not function. I also upgraded to  a new Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 internal hard drive (120 GB) [ata bus].   So, I have this problem.  The G4 upgrades have created a faster machine but virtually no (i) stuff works - would you have any answers for me - something practical that I can work on??  Do I require something else to be added, either hardware or software? Walter

As far as I can tell from the Manufacturers website- you will not be able to use more than 2 GB as the motherboard will not support more. Sorry. It may be time to upgrade your system as you are using a Processor that is about 4 generations behind. (ie.obsolete) and the ram is going to be very expensive.

Are OCZ PC3 1333 ddr3 1.65v memory compatible with

Intel's web site for the board has the following:

The Desktop Board supports the following memory:

  • Four 240-pin Double Data Rate 3 (DDR3) SDRAM Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) connectors with gold-plated contacts arranged in two channels
  • 1333/1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM interface
  • Support for single- and dual-channel memory interleaving
  • Unbuffered, non-registered single- or double-sided DIMMs with a voltage rating of less than 1.6 V. Using a DIMM with a voltage rating higher than 1.6 V may damage the processor.
  • Non-ECC DDR3 memory
  • Serial Presence Detect (SPD) memory only
  • Up to 16 GB maximum total system memory
You need to contact TigerDirect and have them change out the memory for sticks that meet the above specs.

I want to upgrade from cd rw to dvd/cd rw

For thing like DVD burner drives, Windows XP/Vista offer universal support, meaning that it won't matter that you own a Dell computer, you can buy any DVD drive and it will work.

I recommed the following for $51. It also comes with software to support burning DVDs, just in case your current software does not offer this feature.

Barebones troubleshooting

Lex -

I would first check your ram, make sure its the right type and rating for the motherboard. Although most systems will beep at post for a memory issue, sometimes reseating the memory alone can clear up a startup hang.

If the memory is seated okay, the right type and speed rating, try using a different video card in the system. Its possible that the system is starting up normally, but not being displayed.

If neither of those help, minimize the system. Plug in just the bare minimum needed for operation - Power supply, processor, heat sink & fan, a single memory stick, a single hard drive, video card(if its not integrated on the motherboard). Plug in a monitor and the power cord, then see if the system boots.

If all that still fails, verify that the CPU fan AND the Power Supply fan are spinning when power is on. If so, this points to either a bad memory stick(try another), bad processor(if available, try one at a slower or faster speed), or bad motherboard.

Hope this helps!
