Trying to backup iPhone 6s on my computer using iTunes and keep getting error code 54.

Please refer to the following link:

How to Fix Unknown Error (-54) about iPhone/iPad/iPod Cannot Be Synced Sometimes fixing your iTunes sync error (-54) seems a little difficult because it is hard to find which files cause this problem. In this case, you have to sync separately to find what kind of data you can't sync. For example, you can sync only songs to iPhone 6 or iPhone 7 to check whether the music files cause this unknown error (-54).
Of course, there are some common tips you can try to fix this error:
  • Update your iTunes to latest version, now the latest version is iTunes 12.6.2.
  • Upgrade iPhone/iPad/iPod touch to latest iOS operating system. Now you can update to iOS 10.3.3. (The iOS 11 will come out soon, you can update to it when it is available.)
  • Authorize computer in iTunes.Open iTunes > Choose "Store" on iTunes menu and authorize your computer.
  • Change permissions of your "iTunes" folder or original files/folder. You can find the originals that you want to transfer to iOS device and change permission. iMore give us one example to change "Read Only" permission of "iTunes folder" to fix iTunes sync error (-54) on Window 10:
Open Windows Explorer > Go to "Music" folder > Right Click "iTunes" folder > Properties > Uncheck "Read Only".
  • Run iTunes in administrative mode. Sign in to Windows as an administrator > Right click iTunes icon > Select "Properties" > Select "Compatibility" > Check to run as administrator.
  • (For Windows iTunes users) Install all available Windows update service packs. iTunes sync error may be caused by incompatible driver on your windows pc.
  • Use an iTunes alternative After trying solutions mentioned, if your iPhone still cannot be synced due to unknown error occurred (-54), you can try some iTunes alternative, like AnyTrans. As one of the best iTunes alternatives, AnyTrans allows you to transfer media files (like Music, Playlists, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, iTunes U, Audiobooks, Voice Memos, Apps, Ringtones, etc.), and won't erase the existing data on your iPhone iPad. Click Here to Download AnyTrans >

I tried to download the latest version of itunes but for someone it wouldnt download and now my old itunes doesnt work either. When I click on itunes to open it up, a message box pops up reading...

It sounds like the download removed the existing software.

I would open control panel, then click add or remove programs, then click on itunes. see if there is a repair option with the installer. sometimes there is, but if not, then uninstall it, but keep your saved files.

Then re-install it, and when it sets up, it should still accept your old saved files. That way you don't have to recopy you music, games or videos

The 'error 2" is saying that when you clicked on the icon, there was no file remaining in your system that matched what the program was that was assigned to that icon.

You can find out what the program was, and its location by right clicking on the icon, and then click on properties.

Today, i accidently changed the "Open With" funtion for all of my desktop icons to itunes, when i was only trying to fix the itunes icon. Now when i double click on any icon, i.e. Mozilla Firefox...

This will work, it's a little time consuming and there may be a faster way I am not aware of, but this way is sure fire to work. I assume your operating system is Windows because of the "Open With" comment. First thing you have to do is find where the .exe file for each and every program that is affected actually resides. For example you MIGHT find the .exe file that runs word in c:\windows\microsoft\office. That is just an example, the actual place depends on several different things like which OS you actually have, whether its 64 bit OS or 32 bit OS and if you specified a different folder when you installed it. Second you can either delete the shortcut and make a new one by right clicking on the actual .exe file for the program and clicking on create shortcut OR you can right click on the shortcut you already have, click on properties, and type the path to the .exe in the text box labeled "pointer" or "points to" or something similar.

Run a disk check Disk errors, particularly in Windows XP, can prevent proper iTunes installation. See this Microsoft Knowledge Base article for instructions on performing a disk check/repair.
Use Windows Installer Cleanup Use the Windows Installer Cleanup toolto remove any references to Apple-related installation files(QuickTime, iTunes, etc.), then re-try using the aforementionedtwo-step method to reinstall QuickTime and iTunes
