If the paper tears and a piece remains inside the machine, turn the
machine off, open the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) and remove it.
Be careful not to touch the components inside the machine.
After removing all paper, close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover), and turn it back on.
If you cannot pull the paper out, turn the machine off and turn it back on. The paper will be ejected automatically.
(2) Reload the paper in the machine, and press the OK button on the machine.
If you turned off the machine in step (1), all print jobs in queue are canceled. Reprint if necessary.

Cannon ip1600 will dislodge a plastic gear below the paper feed area on the right side if you manually pull a sheet of paper from it with out following the power on/off procedure to clear a paper jam. I have fixed these before. The paper sensor is almost never at fault. You have to remove the top cover and the screws holding the carriage then the screws holding the feed mechanism to snap the gears back in place. The printer can be tested with the cover off and works perfectly every time. Just beware this is the expended ink area. I wash out all the old ink with a water hose before disassembly.
