It is probably a safety switch. The model i own has two switches - one under the seat and one underneath along the frame. Find them and tape them so the button is pushed then try to start it. If that doesn't work it will probably be the ignition has gone bad.

Some mowers have safety switches that unless you are sitting on the seat and the clutch pushed in they will not start. Not sure if this is the answer.

How do you check a ignition switch on a murray riding lawn mower to make sure it is operating properly?

You will need a multimeter... then you will need to check each wire port to see if voltage is registering . I would also disconnect the safety switch under the seat or.. plus put the emergency brake on as well... anything and all that will stop the engine from getting the signal to the coil to start up..

How do I fix my Murray riding lawn mower? The motor will not fire;

coil,safety switches,ignition switch,fuse,connected wrong,,,choose 1 to eliminate then go to the next,etc,,,etc,,

pull the black wire off of the coil,try to start,if it works,the safety switches(1 or 2 or 3 out of 3)are bad,seat,brake/clutch,deck switches,if not,then the coil is bad,pull the ign switch out,clean all contacts on back and plug back in

Sounds like a micro switch issue shutting the engine down, start by checking the seat switch, make sure the connecter is pushed well in.

I have a 1983 Murray riding mower, I need to know the ignition wiring diagram. There's a yellow ignition switch and I don't know where it goes to. There's also a single wire that comes out from the front...

Hi,
With the model number, you can obtain a users manual. I viewed their sample and it included the wiring diagram... SWEET!
Here is the link for your manual:

Murray riding mower motor wont turn over it just clicks

Clicking sound tells you the solinoid is working. There are several possible things causing it not to start. Check the following: Safety switches on the clutch, seat and deck lift handle. If any of these are not making contact, as in the button not pushing all the way in, the mower will not start.
If the safety switch on the deck lift is worn you might try pulling this handle futher back while trying to start the mower. This may work.
Check the key ignition to be sure the prongs on the back have not rusted. If they have and you know the switch is good try taking a small metal brush and clean the prongs.
A good small engine repair shop should be willing to check the ignition switch for you to see if it is good. P.S. If the solinoid was clicking to begin with before you replaced it then it was good and not the problem to start with.

I have a 1993 murray lawn tractor 12.5hp Ignition Switch????

Take an ohm's and amp. meter and go to the ohm's setting and see which terminals are off and on. If you want to kill the engine put it on the off side. If you want to run anything put it on the start and run side of the switch. Hope this clears things up a bit. donnyb60.
