Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Helloi have a Maytag Plus side by side refrigerator (about 10 years old) and I'm having trouble keeping the refrigerator side cold enough. This unit has dual slide bar controls on the ceiling of the refrigerator with settings from 0 to 9. I've set the refrig bar to 9 and the freezer bar to 4 or 5 and the refrig is just cool and the freezer is freezing but just barely. any help you could provide would be most appreciated. regards tim kotschwar geneva ne

Remove the rear panel inside the freezer, your evaporator coil is iced over and cant transfer cold anywhere, deice it,then check the defrost heater under this coil, its probably open and cant heat to defrost the unit

Hello, Problem with Maytag plus Side by Side refrigerator model MZD2766GE.The Freezer part is working fine but the fridge part is not cold at all even after I adjusted the temperature to number 8. I do not...

You most likely have a defrost heater and/or defrost term switch. (switch is built into heater on your fridge).that needs replaced causing your coil to completely freeze up and blocking cool air flow to fridge side. Here is the part you need to order.

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Maytag Plus side by side refrigerator stops cooling. I unplugged it for 24 hours. When I plugg it back in, it works fine for about 2-3 months. Then it stops again and works fine after being unplugged for...

Take food out of the freezer, take out the racks, take off the back panel on the bottom/back ( probably 4-6 screws).. You will see a fan. If that fan has ice around it, then take it all off, chip it, hair dryer, what ever you want. Unplugging it for 24 hours is not enough for all of the ice to melt so it is probably taking a couple months to build back up. Generally this happens in a high humidity time of the year. It will probably happen again, do not freet. Just clean it again. I know one customer that had it happen two years in a row and that was about four years ago. He has had the unit (Maytag Plus side by side refrigerator) about 10 years and is just fine with it. Little inconvience, but sometimes that is the breaks in life. Good luck.... f067b6b.gif

Freezer is cold but not keeping icecream frozen.

If, the fresh food section is 34- 38 degrees, then the freezer should be cold enough to keep ice cream solid. All of the cooling capability comes from the freezer section. I, personally, would not waste time or money on a ten year old box. Ten years ago it cost $1000, so, the outlay is $100 per year. Dump the old refrigerator and get a new one.

GE Selext TFX22GR Not cold enough, already changed timer, heaters plus

Hello beadaholic,
Welcome,

You said, you have a TFX22GR by GE, it has been a very good unit all of these years. Anyway, recently it stopped keeping things cold enough.
Thanks for any help! I am pretty stubborn! hehe
Laura

I wish I only could have told you this earlier on!

Laura, I feel you spent to much money on this very old and inefficient fridge.
I would love to help you repair it!
But I would be doing you a disservice if I advised you to put even one penny more in to your fridge.
A new fridge would pay for it self in only a few years. They are so much more efficient today!

Do not put anymore good money into bad.
Here is an article I just read that you will find interesting and to the point.

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Side by side Sub Zero not cold enough.

How old is "OLDER" ? If there is no frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer you could have one of two problems. On older units the compressor wears out with years of service and no longer pumps efficiently. Or it could possibly be low on refrigerant charge. ether one of these two problems is a sign that is time to update to new unit.

If you have frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer section you then would have a problem in the defrost circuit attributed to the timer, defrost heaters or defrost thermostat.
