You may be able to upgrade the BIOS firmware so it can support USB 2.
You can download the motherboardBIOS upgrade and device drivers from Intel WEB site. Select your
model motherboard/device, andmake sure you select the Windows XP or Vista version of the drivers
thatmatches your Windows operating system. Please click on this link andselect your model motherboard : - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx?iid=gg_support-au+home_downloadctr

I have Windows XP. I connected the hard drive according to the directions and the first message read USB device not recognized. The second message read Try reconnecting. If windows does not recognize it...

If it is a desktop computer, try connecting to one of the rear USB ports. sometimes drives won't be recognized properly from a secondary USB or HUB. If it's a notebook go into control panel and see if you can find and delete unknown devices in hardware then attach and see if it connects. XP should not need a driver install.

I need driver help, yes i am a idiot

No your not.Go to microsoft web site or use the built in Windows Update on your computer. If you haven't downloaded the update tool it will ask you to install it.After it installs the update tool, run it.Pick the updates you need lnstall them some will require you to restart.Later check the automatic update feature to check for updates.Other updates will be from the manufacturer or your PC,check for their updates.Software from their sites. This is not hard.If I were you I would buy a general book on XP you can learn easy steps to keep your PC up to date and won't have to ask anyone (except FixYa.com) good luck

USB suddenly malfunctioning on Dell TOwer

It does sound like your ports on the front might be bad. They usually connect to a seperate port on the motherboard than the rear ones, and I have seen devices short out the front ports, such as a USB music player.

You can remove the ports on the device manager, and they should come back ok, without worry. However, I doubt that is going to help the front ones. I think you have a hardware problem.

If that is the case, the easiest solution is to get a USB hub, and run a USB cable from the rear, to the front of the computer.
