Most likely the black cartridge is either empty or dried up and its printing from the color cartridge within the printer, by the sounds of it the color one is also on its way out.

i would use any options the printer provides to clean the cartridges to see if this fixes it, if its been sitting for a long time not used i would also consider replacing the cartridges as there probably no good any more.

When your black runs out, the color cartridge is used as a backup to the black-but at a price. The printer software will mix the three colors of ink to make a brown tinted black ink. Unless you are watching carefully, the ink color does not change, However when one of the three colors that are used to mix the black go dry, you will then print with the colors remaining, either green, orange, or purpleish, and will finally go to the last color, yellow, cyan or magenta.

My mfc-240c won't print red, even with a new cartdrige.

Try running a few cleanings on the color.

Press the ink button and select cleaning,, do about five cleanings. Print the ink quality test page (from the ink button as well) and see the quality if it improved.

If it still doesnt print its possible the ink is clogged and may need servicing to replace the printer head

Only prints in green and blue

You are more than likely out of magenta (red) ink. That printer uses a tri-color cartridge, and it has cyan (blue) magenta (red) and yellow ink. Green is blue + yellow-therefore you do have those two colors; since it will not print anything red or black you will need to replace both cartridges.

Pictures coming out green

On a picture that you have printed, when you see an area of green, what color should it be? You probably have reduced flow of one of the "balancing" colors. Blue, Yellow and Red add up to Black. If your picture is supposed to be almost black and you don't have enough red, the color will pull toward the blue and yellow, giving it a green tint.

Alarm flashes ink emptyhas ink! color was printing only yellow/green now prints only red/pink!

any chance it has dried out? run the test / head cleaning / did you reset the cartridge when you replaced it? generally if one or two colors work - the problem is the ink cartridge or the head for the colors not working. Did you remove the "tape" on the new cartridge?
