My iMac crashed when I hooked up a new Iomega hard drive. How can I fix that problem?

I opened the new 1TB Hard drive. Plugged it into a power source then plugged the usb into the already powered iMac. The pinwheel started spinning and did not stop for about 5 minutes when I forced the computer to shut off by holding the power switch on the back of the screen. No icons for the new hard drive appeared during this process. I then disconnected the usb connection to the HD and repowered the computer. The gray precursor screen with the apple logo came on and froze. I shut the computer off and waited a few minutes an tried again. This time I left the computer attempting to go on overnight. Still nothing different. Finally, the next morning I restarted it and I am using it right now. Unfortunately, everything works at a considerably slower pace than before this incident. I would appreciate any advice on speeding up the computer and formatting the new HD to work with my iMac.

Macs are exceptionally good machines, if you are still under warranty you can get free support from apple. However at times the apple machines behave very strangely and it is very hard to diagnose the exact reasons for the problem.
There is a software called Onyx; it will search for the programs that are slowing down your mac and then it will suggest you fixes and repairs for the problem. Download it here :
Also the problem can be a fragmented hard drive in that case you can utilize the below program to defrag your apple drives.
Download it here :
If you can still connect your external hard drive to your iMac then follow this link to format your drive using your mac.
If you can't connect to your external drive from your mac; and if you have access to a pc then you can use the ubuntu live cd and use the gparted software in the Ubuntu distribution to format your external drive to hfs volume.
Hope this will help you solve your problem.
Best Regards

I have an iomega minimax device that I cannot seem to connect to my imac. when i plug the device in nothing happens on the desktop.

try getting a new power cord from iomega, If that doesn;t work, the drive is probably corrupted. They are under a year warranty. You ship yours to them and they will send you a new one. Try the free chat on Iomega

Have only just decided to install my new Iomega 500 GB usb 2.0 hard drive and I have mislaid my quick install guide. I have an Apple imac can you help please

Just connect the AC power to the IOMEGA, and the USB cable between the IOMEGA and a USB port on your computer. It is a "plug-and-play" device, and so Apple OS X should automatically recognize it.

Iomega 1TB HD Works on iMac but not on Windows Laptop?

as the mac has a diffreent format to a pc you cannot connect up the drive to a pc because it simply wont recodnise it. the best way is to network the 2 computers together then alow file sharing on the mac and searcc with windows through the network to find the drive. then copy them across the network to your pc. this will then reformat the files to PC files at they hit your PC

Iomega 1TB Desktop USB 2.0 Hard Drive. turned it on it keeps clicking but is not recognised by my laptop.

If it's clicking then more than likely the heads have crashed. It's very expensive to fix...usually 1,500-2,700.

Hopefully you didn't have anything SUPER important on the drive. I usually recover them for 700 but I'm independent so that's why my prices are much lower.

You should still be able to return the drive to Iomega for a replacement (RMA).

Blue light flashing but imac not recognizing.

Iomega is not a recognized company with Apple and may not be compatible with Macintosh and may be a PC only product.

I had a hard drive crash a while back so I had to install a new one. I don't remember what to do next to retrieve the info from my iomega usb hard drive. I am sure the hard drive is a 500 GB desk top

You need to re-install the Iomega backup software on the new hard drive, so that it will see the backup files on the external hard drive.
