Hi. May I know the exact model of your GPS device? Is it scanning for satellites or not?

This is just a clarification request. Please don't rate this yet. Thanks.

How can I start using this?

1. Mount GPS in the vehicle using included hardware
2. Connect GPS to the vehicle's power source using included hardware (cigarette lighter)
3. Power on the GPS and Program personal preferences into the GPS unit
4. Demonstrate GPS functionality including how to find a point of interest, get directions, set-up a home location and save a destination
5. chose a suitable spot on the windscreen and Vacuum work area
to affix.

The basic GPS skills I suggest you first learn are:
1) how to set a waypoint of your current location;
2) how to enter the coordinates of a different location from a map or other reference source;
3) how to determine directions from your current location to another waypoint;
4) how to use the built in compass and altimeter;

Where and how can i register my new garmin nuvi,so i can do the map updates...need help

Mostly all new map updates need to be paid for when using any GPS. If you don't want to pay for new maps, you can still use the GPS but new locations being built wont show up. Try going to http://www8.garmin.com/updatemaps/ and see if you can get any free updates with your new GPS.

Waiting for GPS comes up when I try to get directions, it never loads

what are you using for gps? ovi maps? garmin? google maps?

i suggest installing google maps to see if your gps is working alright.

then check in phone settings to ensure that gps positioning method is enabled for 'built-in gps' and 'assisted gps', thereafter check positioning server is set to 'supl.nokia.com'.

normal lock time is around 5-30seconds with E71 GPS with A-GPS on; anything more than that i'd attribute it to a faulty built-in gps unit.

let me know if it works.

My sat nav won't pick up any satelites

All GPS devices will need a clear view of the southern sky (in the northern hemisphere anyway) to obtain a "fix" or "lock" to display the location on the map.

A fix can usually be had in under a minute or two. The first time "out of the box" however, may require additional time to display the proper location on the display or output. If the device has built-in batteries, bring the device outdoors to an open area (no tree cover, tall buildings, etc.) and allow up to 10 - 15 minutes for the initial fix. If there are no batteries in the unit, extend the cord to allow the device to be outside the car - in a similar location described above (an open parking lot is very good), and allow 10 or 15 minutes to update the location.

GPS device require an open view to the satellites in the sky. Heavy tree cover, tall buildings, etc can cause significant problems for the GPS to obtain the info to determine its location. Some device provide a jack for connection of an external antenna input. These often have an amplifier built in, and can compensate for less than ideal conditions. Antennas with an amplifier built-in are called "active" antennas. Some vehicles may have a film on the windshield (usually a defroster) that can interfere with receiving the satellite signals. In this case, an external antenna would be a logical choice. When placed on the roof, or other location outside, it feeds the signals to the GPS in the car.

A low profile, active external GPS antenna. This will often outperform the one built-in to your GPS.

I want to use the gps and navigator on my nokia 5800 can you please help

The Nokia 5800 has a built-in GPS satellite navigation receiver, which can tell you where you are anywhere on the planet. The 5800 also has cell-tower-positioning technology, which finds your location using the position of the nearest phone network mast if a satellite signal is unavailable. GPS is more accurate but can take a while (from 10 seconds to a few minutes, depending on how obstructed the sky is) to find your position ('Assisted GPS' is also present, to download the expected GPS satellite positions from the Internet and help speed up your fix.)
The 5800 also has a built-in mapping application called Nokia Maps, which shows you your location on a street map, tells you exactly how to get to another location by driving or walking, and can give details of nearby amenities such as shops, fuel stations, museums, etc. Nokia Maps uses both GPS and cell tower positioning to tell you where you are: the latter gives an instant rough position, while GPS data is used after the phone has locked onto enough satellite signals calculate its position. You'll know the phone is locked onto a satelite as the lock indicator at the bottom of the screen will turn green.

Other phone applications can also use the GPS receiver if required. For example the camera application can optionally "geotag" photos with your current location using the GPS receiver to work out where you are (click here to see our camera tutorial and find out more about geotagging). If you switch to the standby or menu screens while an application is using the GPS receiver, you'll see a little satellite icon in the top right corner of the screen to indicate that GPS is active.

How does the 5800's GPS work? Like all satellite navigation systems, the 5800 receives signals from many different GPS satellites in the sky, and calculates your position based on those signals, using a combination of triangulation, signal delay calculation and a lot of very heavy maths that you really don't want to know about.

Important Note: Satellite signals cannot penetrate buildings, so GPS satellite signals will be difficult or impossible to receive if you are indoors and away from windows. If you want to speed up the process of GPS showing your location, take the phone outside or place the phone next to a large window with a good view of the sky.

The 5800's GPS aerial is inside the top left side of the phone. If you want to get a good GPS lock make sure this part of the phone is uncovered

For got pass word on my gps

I have the same model.
You have to go to a specific location to be able to log in and change the password. The person who set the password up should know that location. There is no other way to work around this as it is built in theft protection.

NexStar 130SLT won't keep time when powered off. Is there an upgrade?

No, most scopes do not have built in GPS or a built in clock. It's normal to have to set, TIME, and DATE in the hand controller.

My Meade LX90 has a built in clock, it's an exception to the general rule. Most GPS computer GOTO scopes do not keep time-- you must wait a few minutes until the GPS acquires enough satellites to get the correct time, date, and location.

Reception

I'm not sure that would help at all. An external antenna is useful if you are inside a vehicle to get around the signal being blocked if your gps is inside but from the sounds of your description, you are being blocked by the buildings. What you need is line of sight to the satellites so the gps can triangulate your location. The more satellites it can see, the better. If it cannot locate at least 3, it will not work.
