Hi,

The problem you are having is in the the defrost system. Every 8 - 10 hours the cooling will stop for a short period and heat is applied to the evaporator (cooling coils) to clear the frost. Something has failed in your defroster system.

All the cooling takes place in the freezer section and the internal fan moves the cold around the freezer and into the fresh food side. If your defrost cycle is not working the first place you will notice the warming is in the refrigerator then it will move to the freezer.

To fix this problem you will need to unthaw the evaporator coils. Remove the food and shelves from the freezer, then take off the panel that is behind the shelves in the freezer and you will see the frozen coils, use a hair dryer and or hot water to clear the frost. Be sure the cord to the frig is unplugged. You can also just turn off the refrigerator and open the doors for a couple days and let it unthaw by itself. Either way works, just have lots of towels handy as when the frost melts it makes a mess.

Once the frost is gone you need to find out which part failed. There are 3 components.

- Defrost heater, this is located just below the cooling coils, it can be tested with an ohmmeter, if under 100 ohms it is good, if it is bad it will read open.

- Defrost Thermostat, this is a bimetal that attaches to the top of the cooling coil. This should read 0 ohms when cold.

- Defrost control, this could be either electronic or mechanical depending on your model. If the other two parts are good this is bad

One possible problem is the frost free part of the freezer. There is a heating element attached to the cooling coils to melt the frost off of the coils periodically. We had the problem of a burned out heating element and then later a bad sensor. There should be a panel in back which covers the cooling coils, if removed you find solid frost or even solid ice your freezer cannot cool the refridge sufficiently. Let the freezer defrost also be sure the drain to the evaporator pan underneath is clear you may have to empty the pan for there may be more water coming out then what the pan can hold and have the heating element and/or sensor checked out.

Hello,

The water is from the melted frost of the defrost cycle. The drain at the bottom of the back wall of the freezer is blocked so instead of the water draining into the pan where it will evaperate,it's pooling on the freezer floor and freezing, in many case when the floor indent is full the water will leak onto the floor.By pulling the refrigerator out from the wall, there will be a tube behind the service panel on the right side when looking at it from the rear, that tube can be removed and cleared, then clear the nozzle it connects to inside the freezer.

I hope this helps you to stop the leak,
Gene

Freezer is cold but refrigerator side is barely cooling. turned off and water leaking out of door on the freezer side

Hello Roxanne,

what the problem most likely is a failed part of the defrost system Do you see a bunch of frost built up on the back wall of the freezer? If you do frost build up,i would take off the back wall of the freezer and replace the deforst heater and defrost termination. A hair dryer could be used to melt the built up frost from the coil behind the back wall. Another part that will cause frost build up is the defrost control, that isn't the freezer behind the back wall but instead in the fresh food compartment in the control panel where the thermostat is. I would replace heater/defrost termination first though since they are the most likely to fail parts.

I hope my answer will help you to fix your refrigerator,
Gene
