Tecra A11 can't see all of 3TB drive

Support for Disk Drives Beyond 2.2 TeraBytes (TB) and 4K Advanced Format Sectors

Most legacy systems built before 2011 have a traditional PC BIOS. This type of BIOS uses a Master Boot Record (MBR). The MBR Partitions can define a disk drive capacity up to 2.2TB. Windows operating systems that boot from an MBR are therefore limited to 2.2TB per MBR. A 3TB disk drive in a legacy BIOS and Window system will need a DiscWizard device driver to access the full capacity of a 3TB disk drive. Two partitions will be necessary because of the MBR limitation. The device driver mounts the capacity above 2.2TB with another MBR which looks to the system as a second virtual "physical" device.
GUID Partition Tables (GPT) can define drives larger than 2.2TB. You can use GPT today on any Windows 10/ 8.1/8/7 and Vista system as a non-booting data drive. Windows can only boot a GPT partition on a new type of BIOS called UEFI.
UEFI BIOS desktop systems are new since 2011. Windows 10/8/8.1/7 64-bit and Vista 64-bit operating systems support booting from UEFI and GPT without the need of a non-Microsoft device driver. This is the Windows native solution for booting a 3TB drive to a single partition.
Quick facts about Windows and 3TB drives:

  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista support GPT 3TB single partitions
  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista can only boot GPT on systems with UEFI BIOS
  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista can mount a GPT non-booting data drive
  • Intel RST device drivers before v10.1 do not support 3TB disk drives
  • Windows systems with Legacy BIOS and MBR boot drives are limited to 2.2TB partitions
  • Windows XP does not support GPT
  • Windows XP sees a 3TB drive as 800GB on boot or data drives
  • DiscWizard software can install a device driver which opens the full capacity of a 3TB. You can use it to create a second partition for the capacity above 2.2TB

According to Microsoft, Windows 7 must be installed on a primary partition. This error code means the installer hasn't found a primary partition on the target drive. The primary partition must be on the first hard drive in the boot order, and if you have more than one user partition (not counting the small drive table partition), you must install to the first user partition. Unfortunately MS doesn't seem to have a clear, comprehensive answer to the issue. I've gleaned the following from various forum responses.

For some reason the installer is date sensitive, so make sure the time and date are correct in the BIOS. Time your next install attempt so it will NOT go past midnight during the installation.

Check your BIOS settings to make sure the drive is listed as a "primary" drive (drive 0, not drive 1) rather than a secondary.

Some people have had problems with the Windows 7 installer on drives that have the Master Boot Record from previous installations. Try a FORMAT /MBR using the Windows 7 install CD. If this doesn't work,
  1. Use the partition command to remove the target partition from the drive to wipe this out
  2. Partition the now unused space and reformat (again!), and
  3. If the partition command or installer has an option to set a partition as primary (or something else), choose primary (disk 0) for the partition you want to use for Windows 7.
If all else fails, use your HP Software Recovery CD to do a complete repartition and reformat. You could use the Windows 7 partition command to do the same thing, but then you would lose the HP System Recovery partition. However, if HP is marking the System Recovery partition as partition 0, it could be causing the problem. In that case, see if HP has an updated version of the CD that includes a fix for this, or do without it and turn it all over to Windows 7.

It sounds like you have a corrupt registry... :(

Vista handles their registry fixes a bit differently than xp.
However, I found a nice Microsoft article to help me out.

I'm pretty sure it is easier to repair the registry with Vista and 7, make sure to back it up!

Oh, one last note --- In my case with XP, it was a lot easier to manuver registry files if the Hard Drive is hooked up to another computer.

Unable to connect to internet on broadband, keep getting error message 651, Win 7. No problem prior to loading Win 7, used to have Vista Ultimate.

This a well known bug in Windows 7 specially when you migrate from Windows Vista to Windows 7.
The cause is a file "raspppoe.sys". This file will be found on the partition you have installed your operating system If it is C: partition then it is found on C:\Windows\System32\drivers.
To fix this bug simply rename it as shown as follows

(1)Rename this file from "raspppoe.sys" to raspppoe.old or any name it any name of your choice.
(2)Once this done simply restart

Good luck!

I am desperately trying to change my HD to a file system FAT32, now i know the deal in doing something like this and have tried different ways in doing so. Unfortunately each solution always ends in one...

You have to know that in order to have a HDD formatted with FAT32 the space must not exceed 32GB. so you need to partition your HD into two logical hard-drives then have one of the partitions in the size of anything less than 32GB, then simply reformat using FAT32 attributes.

If you are using windows vista, then its super easy to partition and format your external HD while logged on. if you need more instructions on how to do this, let me know.

Hope that helps.
