Question about KitchenAid KSM5PS Heavy Duty Stand Mixer

1 Answer

Hi, grinding meat with the heavy duty model 325 watt, and everything was going good no bogging etc, feeding the grinder slowly after about 10 minutes of grinding i start to hear a knocking. it is physical you can feel it in the machine and it sounds and feels as if it is coming from above the paddle attachemt/behind the front attachment whole. everything physically works from outside appearance except for the knocking whick almost sounds like a thrown bearing on a car only on a smaller scale obviously. suggestions opinions thank you for your time with this whatever the outcome. 325 k5ss mixer stir speed not working, but works in all other gears

First congrats on the great mixer that you have. next the pro 6 or professional 600 series mixers are of an entirely different design than the one that you have even though they are both bowl lift. Do you really need 6 quarts capacity? The pro series is a 575 watt mixer BTW, and it will have more power available to you IF you are doing bread or a lot of food grinding, if that is a requirement that you have then the 6 / 600 series is the better suited mixer but if all you are doing is general medium to light mixing duties then fix and keep the K5SS it a great machine,

Hi, the motor went slower and slower and now has stopped. We were using the meat grinder and we have only used this machine 9 times in the past two years. We are very upset customers and have 15 pounds...

If you remove the meat grinder, does the mixer still work? It could be that the meat grinder is jammed.

You might have also blown a breaker. Have you tried plugging a lamp or something else into the outlet to make sure it's still working?

K5SSWW Stand mixer started slowing down while grinding shrimp

I'm not quite sure about this answer but it occurs to me that it could be the governor. It sits at the back end of the armature and as the speed control is slid to faster speeds the governor moves away from its rest position pressing against the control plate. If the governor's pivots were to be binding, even slightly, it would explain the symptoms you are describing. A service manual can be found at:

The attachment for grinding meat on the front wont work ? mixing arm in bowl works fine ! why wont it engage?

Firstly I would check it is fully engaged. If it is, remove the food grinder and look into the hole. You should be able to see a square hole inside. Turn on the mixer, the square hole should spin, if it does not, one of the gears inside the head has most likely broken. To repair this you will need to take the head apart.

The other possibility is that I misread your problem and that the grinder is turning, but the meat wont go through the plates at the end. This is a common issue which happens if the blade is not put in the end of the grinder. The blade is shaped like a cross and cuts the meat when it reaches the end of the screw.

I've the 325 watts its 110V kitchen aid and I

You will need a 'step-down' transformer with a rating of at least 500 watts (~500 VA), a primary designed for 220 Volts and a secondary rated at 110-115 Volts. This type will have four terminals or leads and isolates the input from the output.
There is a non-isolating type called an 'autotransformer' which has one winding with a tap (total of three terminals) roughly in the middle. I use this type for certain devices but it is not as safe as the first-described type.
If you are living in a foreign country that uses the ~220 Volt standard, you can sometimes get one on 'semipermanent' loan from the local utility.

Under a heavy load, the mixer began clunking once per revolution

Disassembly and inspection is the only way to verify what it is. It sounds like you are correct. I have bought parts very reasonably on line and repaired our K/A mixer. The better sites ( I think I used appliancerepair.com) have exploded diagrams. If you are tearing into yours, these are invaluable, and when you get to the broken part, you'll have a name for it.

The pasta/meat grinder attachment stops turning

Its a 325 watt mixer. If you grind or mix dough often you may consider getting something stronger or turn it off every ten minutes or so and let it cool down. We burned a 325 and got the 575 watt "600" series and no problems ever since. I know these things are expensive. The 325 is more mixer than grinder. The attachements fit ANY size mixer but some are not recommended for use in all mixers.
If its quiting see my posts on "doesn't run at sitr" and "Removing the motor cover" To get inside and clean those contacts.

Black Residue on meat using Kitchenaid meat grinder attachment

This is a common issue with the Kitchenaid food grinder. The black residue is a product of the meat itself.

With Kitchenaid Food Grinder Attachments, it is recommended that the meat be partially frozen before grinding. This is to ensure a quality grind and to make sure the meat holds all its juices while grinding.

If any juices from the meat are leaked into the food grinder, the friction will cause a chemical reaction and turn the juice from the meat into a black substance.
