Question about Dell Inspiron 4000 Notebook

1 Answer

Wireless cards I need to buy a wireless card for my dell laptop, but am not sure what I need. I am traveling abroad in France, and would like to be able to use the laptop's internet connection while I am there. Also, my laptop was formerly set up for dial up service. Do I need to do anything else to use wireless service abroad?

What OS are you using, The 4000 had different OS's shipped from Dell. Red Hat Linux 7.0, Win2000,Win ME, Win98,95,NT4,NT3.5
The OS you use and the Service Tag number will give us a better idea as to how to help you.

As long as your laptop is running windows 2000 or XP. You can go with almost any PC wireless card. My recommendation would be to take your laptop to your local computer store and they should be able assit you and get you all set up

Thanks

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

There is a strong chance that the wireless card inside is bad. I work at a computer repair shop and work mainly with laptops. It isn't uncommon for wireless cards to go bad, before their "time". Usually Dell's have access panels on the bottom of the laptop where you can see the wireless card. It will have 2, sometimes 3 small wires plugged into it. Usually dell' use Dell brand cards, which are really repackaged Broadcom wireless cards in most cases. In your situation, write down what the model number is, go to another computer, look up that model on ebay, buy one, replace it.

Best wireless router options for the inspiron 6000

Not sure what you're asking. If your laptop has a wireless card installed in it, then any wireless router should work. If you're asking what wireless router to buy, do a Google search on top 10 wireless routers.

Does the older Dell have a wireless radio?

If not, you'll have to use an ethernet cable to the 2wire router or buy a wireless USB card for about $35 or less for the old Dell. I'm assuming you are running XP SP2 or higher system.

Hello, Lyn.

On the left side of your laptop, you'll find a wireless on/off switch. See if that switch was turned off.

Hopefully, that will help.

P.S. I didn't grow up in the computer age, either.

Chng internal wireless adapter from 11Mbps to 54 Mbps

The 802.11 protocol is for wireless adapters. If your is 11MBs, it is a b card. Buy a g or n card to achieve the 54 MBs you want. Be sure to uninstall the b card and software before you install the new card.

Good luck, and please let me know how this works out for you.

Upgrade wireless to 802.11n on this machine

Well, the easy way to connect to your router is not to replace the card, thats overkill!
Do it the easy way and buy a wireless USB adapter insted! :) to be 100% sure that it wont give u any truble is to buy an USB adapter from the same manufacture as your router.
That will solve all your problems whit a low cost:)

Good luck to you!

Wireless internet card for DELL C600 - ?

personally i would go for a usb wireless adapter as many people have driver problems with the pcmcia slot and are unable to get it to recognise the card, whereas usb is much simpler to use. All the usb type adapters are much the same they dont have to be the same make as your router, but buy the same transfer speed type, for example if you have a 108MBPS router buy the compatible 108 MBPS adapter as a 54MBPS adapter will reduce the transfer speed capabilty, not to be confused with your connection speed.
