It may be a broken solder joint. It may also be a capacitor in the power supply is failing, but a bit less likely.
Pull the chassis out and look closely for any breaks in the circuit board. If none are found then look at all soldered connections, or better yet- reflow each one.
Power it up outside of the case and if it cuts out again, check for voltages at the finals, You should be close to 48 volts from chassis ground to the high side power rails of the finals. One positive polarity with respect to ground, the other negative. You can measure the voltage at the 2-4700 microfarad filter caps. You should see about 48 volts across each cap. If voltage drops on one side, check the cap visibly for leakage or bulging- replace it if either condition is found..Also check for 16 volts at each of the 50 microfarad caps nearby for the same scenario.
Also clean the controls if that has not been done yet either.and look how they are soldered to the PC board. .
If it is a tube amp, the tube finals may not be producing enough free electrons from the heater and should be replaced.
The same can be true of the preamp tubes as well, but they also tend to become more noisy.
If it is a solid state amp, Or you just retubed a tube amp Check to see if the filter caps are begining to fail. These will usually reveal themselves as more 50 or 60 Hertz hum or harmonic thereof depending on the mains frequency and which cap is failing. While not highly likely, it is also possible the power transformer is failing- but it will produce a burned smell if it does.
Do you hear any sound if you crank it up and go in front of it? It sounds that the power amplifier has gone.. If you hear anything i believe that its not the final stage as it should have a relay to cut everything that goes to the speaker if a problem occures in the circuit.. Leave it to cool for an hour or so and try again.If it doesnt start up normally and you have warranty bring it back to the shop you got it for repair , else if you have any electronics experience ,open it up carefully (there are high voltages inside) and see for burnt components (resistor of 1/4 watt may have discolored or burnt at all)..If you have a multimeter, leave to speaker to cool unplugged from the mains for about an hour ,set the multimeter to diode check (where it beeps if you short circuit the terminals of the multimeter) and check all big transistors for short circuits...
Hello The set need a through checkup. It has some internal short circuit, that trips the protection delay. It is a skilled work, and you need sound knoledge in electronics to follow. If you have, open the set and check its power supply section.
Bad ground, excess gain, excess number of mixer channels with no inputs, Make sure the mixer inputs you are going to use are the only ones that are up. Power supply noise- flourescent lighting noise, Clamp on ferrites on the power cords of everything can help reduce this. You can sometimes track the offending source with a battery powered AM/MW radio.
It can also be caused by going from a balanced output to an unbalanced input with some impedance differences.
colearthur16, Only a slight chance of problem with your speaker. You will need to prove that all stages of amplification of the audio signal from input to output are not being driven into distortion (clipping) because of a bad DC power supply rail to the low level amplifiers or the high power "final" output amp! To prove this, you will need the help of an electronics technician who has access to a variable audio signal generator (amplitude and frequency) and a cheap 5 to 20 megahertz oscilloscope to view the amplified waveforms of the amplifier stages in the Fender Amp. Remember the following statement for the rest of your life!!! "All musicians who use electronic amplification to play musicial notes through speakers should have between 4 and 8 hours of classroom instruction on how typical amplifiers (tube and solid state) operate and how to troubleshoot them when they fail to perform to rated specifications!!!"
Cole, have the Fender amplifier (not the speaker) tested by a qualified technician to prove amp is not at fault!!! 12fixlouie
it could have blown the speaker, a regular guitar amp is not meant to handle a bass, you should be able to look into the back of the amp and see if any of the speaker is damaged, or there may be a blown fuse inside the amp, if you check for this please MAKE SURE TO UNPLUG THE AMP FROM THE POWER SOURCE FIRST, and if needed replace the fuse with the exact same type
