This may be irrelevant, but run a full antivirus scan and a full antispyware scan. If you don't have any, you can download both of these for free from AVG (do a Google search with the string AVG Free).

A lot of people are having "similar" problems with the cause being a Trojan.

Good luck.

1.Restart your computer. Immediately after the screen goes blank for the first time, press the F8 key repeatedly. The Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If the menu does not appear, restart your computer and try again. Use the cursor keys on your keyboard (your mouse will not work) to select Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER. Windows XP attempts to start.

.
If you recently installed new hardware, shut down your computer and disconnect the hardware. Then, restart Windows XP and troubleshoot your hardware to get it working properly.
3.
Restart your computer and press F8 again. This time, choose Safe Mode and press ENTER. Windows XP attempts to start in Safe Mode, which does not automatically start programs and hardware, and displays very primitive graphics. If Windows XP starts successfully in Safe Mode, you can remove any programs or updates you have recently installed. Then, restart your computer normally.

Performing a repair installation of Windows XP can fix many serious startup problems. While you should not lose any of your important documents, you might lose settings, and you will need to reinstall many updates.
Before performing a repair installation of Windows XP, you should have both your Windows XP CD and your product key available.
To perform a repair installation of Windows XP
1.
Insert your Windows XP CD into your computer.
2.
Restart your computer. If prompted, press a key to start from the CD-ROM.
When the Welcome to Setup page appears, press ENTER on your keyboard.
On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement page, read the licensing agreement. Press the PAGE DOWN key to scroll to the bottom of the agreement. Then, press F8.
When prompted, press R to have Windows XP attempt to repair Windows by reinstalling important Windows components.
The repair and reinstallation process might take more than an hour. Eventually, Setup prompts you to answer questions just as if you were installing Windows XP for the first time. For detailed instructions, read Install Windows XP.

I BOUGHT A MINI LAPTOP. IT'S AN ASUS EEE PC WITH WINDOWS XP. EVERYTIME I UPGRADE THE WINDOWS 6 TO WINDOWS 7, IT COMPLETELY LOCKS ME OUT OF THE INTERNET. I UNINSTALLED WINDOWS 6, BUT NOW I CAN'T GET ON...

Format the drive and then only install Windows 7 and see how that works. Could be conflicts between files from different versions of windows. If that doesn't work then wipe out the drive again and make sure you restore your laptop to its original factory settings. Windows 7 make not work right in certain circumstances cause its in Beta.

HP LAPTOP PROBLEM

Hi there

As knotbeerdan says you may need to repair Windows.

If the laptop is Windows XP, find a Windows XP system disk (the restore disk it came with or any system disk.

Put it in the CD drive and start the laptop.

When it gives you the option, type in R to repair Windows.

It may come to C: prompt.

Type in "chkdsk". This should check the hard drive for errors.

After this restart the laptop. Hopefully Windows will run properly again

Computer Shuts Down By Itself

It sounds like the heads that read your hard drive are deteriorating. If you have data that you need on the hard drive hook it up as a slave drive to another computer and save your data now. Because eventually you will no longer be able to access any data on the drive. Then you will have to send it to one of those data recovery places that use clean rooms to recover your data. That will be very expensive.

Or you might have a bad sector in bios. In that case, I am not sure what to do.

Hp laptop computer will not boot up. The power comes on and you can not hear the hard drive start spinning - no hard drive clicking either. You can hear the fan start blowing....but nothing on the lcd...

You hit the problem right on the head, NO BOOT. All computers have to have a system disk to read whether it is on a floppy or hard drive. your computer is not reading your hard drive. It either is really screwed up from the boot, or it has been formated and has nothing to read. Try installing a new copy of windows or inserting some type of bootable disk. if that works, Install your windows operating system. Insert a disk in your D drive or your CD drive letter and turn the computer off, restart the computer and the disk should boot your computer. Good Luck.

I opened my recently purchased Compaq Armada M700 laptop. i pushed the blue "on" button. the machine is stuck at "Initializing Intel Boot Agent Version 2.6 (build 004)" Nothing else...

First place your recovery disk in the cd drive. Then hold down the power on/off button for 15 seconds. The machine will power down. Then restart normally and reinstall from the disk.

Hi, I have an ASUS W1000 laptop and I am having problems with the CD/DVD drive. The computer can still read the hardware as I have uninstalled it and the restart automatically reinstalled the drive....

my Solution is to purchase an external dvd writer and use that as the internal onse dont last long as the heat from the laptop can cause problems to the connectors to the dvd burners.

hope this will help.

Read disk error occured during rebooting

The acer recovery software sometimes has it's glitches. The CD might be fine, its just the data that wa written to the disk @ time of recovery creation was corrupt at some point.

If your machine shuts down randomly there can be only 3 possible solutions to this one:
  1. Your battery from your laptop has an issue. Try letting the laptop run on AC power ONLY.
  2. Your CPU is overheating, caused by a broken or unresponsive CPU heat sink fan, which causes your pc to shutdown (will always auto- shutdown at a certain temperature to prevent damage to the CPU. Check if you can feel "air" coming out of your laptop, suppose to be a hatched outlet at the side or at the back or on the top cover.
  3. You have a Virus that is shutting down the pc when it wants to. NO Operating system issue can cause your PC to shutdowb; only a virus can do that.
Summary, check your battery, check if your CPU fan is running, and make a virus scan (if the pc doesnt shut down). Remember to make a backup of your DATA, cause Acer (i dont think they will) don't do backups. Waranty on Acers is usually 3 years, depending on the country. So they should replace and repair, everything.
