Everytime that I print, the paper never leaves the tray, the printer tries to pick it up 3 times and then you get a message that the printer is out of paper or misfed. I have checked there does not appear to be any paper jams Any ideas?
Papper never realy "jams" the problene is usualy that the paper is late reaching the next paper sensor. What i would sugest is that you clean the paper pickup roller it is usualy in the shape of a D. Clean it with dishwassing soap dont use water just clean soap rub it on with a clean cloth until the roller is dry so use a small amount. This should solve your prbleme.
I have tried this cleaning the D shaped roller, i did this by printing a test page, and pulling the paper out just before the roller pickked it the up and slipped my hand in and got a good clean of D-shape roller.
Now the problem that lies with the printer is the printer pulls up the paper left side of the paper and doesn't pull up the right side. this causes the paper to be dragged into the printer at a slant.
cant think of much to do, as it such a small printer, everythings built in!!

I would advise also opening the door on the back of the printer (if this printer has one), removing any paper trays and cartridges too. All of these can obscure places where paper can jam. Be thorough as even the tiniest scrap can cover a vital sensor.
Not all of the paper jam was actually cause by paper. There are also instances that the media is the one that is jammed, causing to display a "paper jam" message.
If you can't find any jammed paper from the unit, you can try inspect the following cause.. 1. Trays are loaded improperly or overfilled. 2. Tray 2 or tray 3 is removed during print job. 3. The top cover is opened during print job. 4. The media that is being used does not meet HP specifications. 5. The media that is being used is outside of the supported size range.
Also, try to tun HP toolbox.. on the Paper Jam options, click the Typical Jam Locations... to see the internal paper path and potential jammed locations.
Try to press the reset button on your printer if did not works just try to download the reseter of your printer in HP Laserjet 1020 at the HP website. Because your printer have a lifespan printing; example if your printer have a 100,000 copies to be print so you have aloud to print not more than 100,000 copies. That's why need to reset your printer using the reseter program by HP.
hp printers typically do not have an error message to cover every known condition, thus if the printer needs maintenance in an undefined area, it will invariably indicate a paper jam. The printer usually responds to the installation of a maintenance kit which will include transfer roller, pickup rollers, and fuser.
Hp false paper jam error message is displayed by the printer when paper is jammed in one or more locations. In such a case, users are recommended to remove the jammed paper from the specified location. The entire paper path must be checked for any pieces of paper. To stop the message, open and close the top most cover of the printer. Lastly, verify the flags and the sensors. If the problem persists, the cause of the error message could be a broken sensor or sensor lever.
