Try to turn off the laptop. Remove the cables and battery on the pc. Press and hold the power button for 8 secs. Then reinsert the cables and battery on the pc. Turn on the laptop and check if the screen still black. If it is, make sure that the monitor power light is on. Otherwise, there might be a problem on the video card. If you know how to reseat a video card, go for it and here is the step by step, instructions:
Turn off the laptop, remove the cables and battery, remove the screws at the bottom part 4 corner sides, remove the hard drive, remove the optical drive, then remove the video card and reinsert it. Then reinsert the other peripherals in descending order.
If still did not work, call HP and have your video card replaced...
