Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

I have a Hobart refrigerator Mod. # 03-2 ser.# 32-302-46. The temp started rising slowly, I cleaned the condensor coil and found the evap. coil covered in ice. Is there a defrost for this refrig? And does it run off a time or switch? Any other things it might be, or ideas would be helpfull. Thank you.

If the evaporator coils of the freezer are icing up it is because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air. Check your defrost timer, defrost heater, and defrost thermostat with a multimeter for continuity. If the heater and thermostat are ok then you will need to replace the control board

Hello,

Yes, there is a defrost, the defrost timer is usually found behind the front grill "toe kick" of the refrigerator. It may also be found behind a cover plate inside the refrigerator or freezer, in the temperature control console, or behind the refrigerator near the compressor. To test whether the defrost timer is simply failing to advance, locate the advance screw and turn it clockwise until you hear it click. This advances it to the next mode. If it was cooling before, it is now in defrost mode. Simply wait about 35 minutes and check whether it has left defrost mode and has resumed cooling (listen for the compressor). If it does not advance, the timer motor is probably bad and the entire timer needs to be replaced. If it advances as it should, then you can follow the steps below to test the switch electrically.
The timer is usually held in place with one or more screws. Remove the screws and gently pull the timer out far enough to disconnect the wiring connector. The connector can be removed by firmly pulling and rocking it left and right. It is not necessary to note the position of the wires because the connector plug is keyed so that it can be replaced in only one way.

Take care.

You may have a freon leak but check the obvious first. Are your coils clean? Are the condenser and evap fans both running? Is there any ice or frost buildup on the back panel in your freezer?

Check the condenser fan motor in the back, bottom of unit. pull off lower panel. Fan should be running when unit is running. Also check the condensor coils underneath or in back to make sure they are clear.

Your pressure sound pretty good. I would check the thermostat and the relay on the compressor. If you are getting no frost on your coil, that is usually a tall-tall sign of a bad compressor then it would be better to just replace the unit.

GE PSC23NSD SS refrigerator malfunction

Check the cover in back of the freezer for for frost build-up. I think Frost reached the evap fan-blades and stopped it from blowing cold to the ref-side. Contro;s can be confusing. The ON-OFF controls how long the compressor runs, and the other dial how open or choked the airflow from the freezer into the refrigerator. Sometimes it happens that you have that flapper shut and no air is getting moved to the reefer. If frost is on the cover you have dead heater elements on the evap coils or a faulty hi-temp limit switch, which is the disc thingee at the top of the coils. A bad timer also may disallow it going into defrost - think about it. Chris in big bEar
