Try turning on the AV scree n and turn off the AV firewall, then turn off (completely) the unit, then start up again...this time try to re-connect to the internet/w the original disk....
on a desktop...there is a modum/ on which you can see a light on if you have a connection...not familiar/w laptop, but if equivalent thing tells you your "on" but you can't get the site on the screen your AV firewall could be blocking it.
My AVG 8.0 has a screen on which you need to select the proper "configuration" (computer in domain) befor it will act correctly...when I didn't, it displaid similar symtoms....
