An ajustable wrench for the 'wire brush end' nut,and a visegrip type plier for the opposing wheel end. Wrap the jaws of the visegrip pliers with tape to protect the spindle opposite the wir wheel. Loosen the nut on the wire wheel end, counterclockwise.REMEMBER: lefty loosey-righty tighty.

Replace brushes

In the middle of the housing set on both sides, there is a cap cover you have to pry off with a small screwdriver to get to the brush caps. Screw the brush caps off and remove the brushes (PN CB-430). If the brushes are stuck, pull on them until they come out. If the brush contacts/wires break off, you'll have to remove the armature and push the brushes through the brush holders. If the brush holders are damaged, replace the end bell, PN638448-2.

Where to plug in brushes on my dw887 die grinder

Remove the back halves of the housing (where the cord and switch are). Once you have the halves opened, you'll see the wires on the brushes going in by the motor. There are coil springs that hold them down. Take a paper clip and lift those springs up and rest it on something. (You can completely take the springs out but you don't need to.) Then slide the old brushes out. Detach the wire and replace with the new ones.

Make sure when you are reassembling the housing halves to keep the wires from being pinched.

Hello
Take a look at the brush holders and see if you spot a series of holes on the front of the holders.Push the brush back and pin the brush back with a piece of wire. There will be a way to pull the wire through a vent. You can do alternators on cars like this, just go to an alternator rebuilding shop.Brushes used to be under a dollar. first unplug the tool, next on the backside you will notice a screw, remove it and slide the cover back to expose the backside of the motor. gently move the springs that hold the brushes tight to the side and remove the brushes and replace. Make sure to replace the springs and then slide the cover back into place and replace the screw and that should take care of your problem.

I had been using this grinder for about 2 weeks with no problems. A few days ago while using it it just popped and hasn't worked since.

These are great grinders. I have two of them. One version (more expensive one) has soft start and good overload system. Other version is basic grinder. if it (popped) most likely a short in the motor. Is it possible you got an unusual amount of grinding dust into the grinder? This grinder has a safety feature on the brushes, that keeps from burning up the armature when the brushes wear out. I doubt you've worn out a set of brushes in 2 weeks, unless you've been using it non stop. At least one of the brushes has a small plastic insulating pin inside the carbon. When the brush wears down enough to expose the plastic pin, the spring loaded pops out, lifting the brush from the armature , which opens the circuit. You could remove the brush holders and inspect the brushes. If it is 2 weeks old it is under warranty, and you should return it where you bought it.

Magnetic brush size

Yes and no. From 1999 to early 2008, excluding the slightly beefier "Ergo" models, the size / part number is the same. However, on the newest models there are differences in density between some models. Wire placement is different from the older models.

Armature problems

Unplug tool and then remove the brush caps and brushes, at the front of the tool are 4 screws that need to be removed after removing them you might have to pry the gearcase from the motor housing and then it should just pull out if there is no problems with the field having been hot and melted. Why does my dw831 grinder keep tripping circuit breakers?

try checking the brushes.

to do this: remove the 2 small covers on the left and right side of the tool and push aside the coil spring holding in the brush. the brush should freely pull out of the holder.

when you have the covers off, look for charring or melting. and after the brushes are out, rotate the arbor to move the armature inside and look to make sure it's not charred.

if that doesnt help, take apart the handle and look for melted or exposed wire. dewalt likes to pack the wires in tight among the screws and sometimes the normal vibration of the tool will cause a screw to cut into a wire and short the wire.

new brushes and holders (if melted) are usually around 20 dollars US
